Well my speakers does not qualify as a hifi audio gear and I am a complete audiophile noob, but I would appreciate any help.

My Logitech Z-680 subwoofer has been giving a lot of problems lately and the issue is worsening. Its crackling like a torn speaker so I'm assuming the woofer is dying. The rest of the set is working absolutely fine, so I wondering if I could only replace the woofer speaker. The original sub was 8 ohms and rated at about 180w.

Can anyone suggest a cheap and good woofer speaker in that specifications?

I have removed the woofer and it can be easily replaced by a different speaker of the same size by connecting the positive and negative terminals.

I have uploaded an actual video to demonstrate how the speaker sounds

If someone wants to look at the inside of the subwoofer, here is a link

Hey buddy thats was for his specific requirement ;)!!

For you DIY I can always help !! If I understand properly, you want to build a sub to replace Yamaha Sub ???

Let me know as I can suggest based on the info. Anyways you coming to Bangalore right so can chat bout that then ;)!

Regards.

Hi,

See its not as easy as you think or say ! just remove it and replace it and Viola things will be back to normalcy !!

Please don't get me wrong, but there are set of ground rules that define the usage of specific drivers for specific box dimensions and such !!

But anyways if you want to experiment with some then,Hit Lajpat Rai market and try !! you'll find tonnes of similar sized woofer there !!

Else it might be also a good idea to have the same driver re-coned !! that way you are safe to some extent !!

Please revert back with your thing on this for more suggestions and options !

Regards.

As you might have guessed, I am a complete audio layman :o

By listening to the video, do you think the woofer is at fault or the amp ?

In Lajpat Rai Market, any specific shops that you know or specific brands that I should look out for ?

The original sub was 8 ohms and rated at about 180w, in a replacement woofer how do I check the specs ?

And where can I get the same driver re-coned ?

Well thats understood,so only posted whatever I did ;)! Anyways let that not stop you from enjoying music !

From the video it apparent that voice coil of the driver is rubbing ! So yes it is a driver fault not the Amp (they don't usually show these signs if they are gone) !

There are few shops in LPR Market, one of them is King Electronics, another Ankit Electronics (shop no 13 or so) ! there are others too but the names escapes me right now,Sorry :p

As with re-conning you have try the places which are there, usually its easily identifiable with them keeping all the drivers in unfinished condition !

Another option is to get a replacement from the US if you have any friends or relatives coming !!

One of the Drivers which I think can work for you is this

Apex Jr Super 8

See if you can order it or get it from the above said method !

Finally if nothing works, you can send the driver to me and I can get it re-conned and send it back to you !!

Regards.

Thanks for your suggestions.

Well I spoke to a car audio dealer known to me. He has a 8" Polk audio woofer speaker, model DB840 4ohms for 3500/-.

Now if i decide to go for this, what will be the implications of using a 4ohms speaker instead of 8 ohms. Is it recommended to replace with this speaker?

the polk audio would be the db840 and it's highly inefficient. (needs big amp tor drive it well.. not sure if your current sw amp would be upto scratch)additionally, it's not likely that the T/s parameters would match your current driver and consequently you may not be able to get the maxium performance from the system, without changing port length and / or port dia.

in my very humble opinion, if you are new to this is your best bet would be to get a diy guru to recommend an appropriate driver and also model a box for you. get a carpenter to make the box.. shove in all the electronics & speaker and enjoy better sound.

or... you may find it easier to ask logitech for a replacement woofer.

on the issue of your crackling.. I am not sure it's rubbing.. it sounds like a loose connection is causing sparking inside hence your sound..

if you put all 5 fingers aroudn the dust cap and gently, evenly push in, do you here any rubbing sound?

to isolate that it is really the speaker and not the amp.. try another speaker with the logitech amp and try this logitech speaker with another amp.

if it is the speaker typically this happens when the connection between the tinsel leads and voice coil become loose.. (this is more easy to achieve with bass reflex systems like yours.. which unload the driver below resonance, you can cause over excusion, and repeated over excursion.. can cause this)

if you continue to use the speaker, it will die. but if it is a tinsel lead, there is hope that someone with skill with a soldering iron can help you.. the result may not be visually appealing but it may be a low cost fix

thanks man,
i'm not looking at a drop in replacement.. that would be 6.5"..

I'm looking at a new build for a 12 x 12 x 10 ft room.. with overall cost & box size being a constraint. plus room gain in such a room would really help me.. target - 25hz -6dB in room with room gain .. current thoughts are 8" sealed with linkwitz transform

we will discuss when we meet. my diy days are now ancient history so I will be thrilled for the benefit or your expertise.

currently my holiday plans at 21st may to may end.

cheers

Thanks kapvin for the explanation.

However I would like to avoid going the complete DIY style due to my lack of expertise and would prefer going for a ready made replacement, even if it means compromising a little on the performance front.

The problem with Logitech is that they don't give out replacement parts, if the speaker fails within warranty, they replace the complete set.

So I am planning to go for a replacement woofer.

As I asked earlier, what will be the implications of using a 4ohms speaker instead of 8 ohms. Or how can I wire a 4 ohm speaker to 8 ohm ?

Any other woofers recommended ?

i've beem out of this for more that a decade.. please ask soundsgreat or some other diy guru. you may have noticed that I myself was seeking recomendations on drivers from him

Which part of that message gave the impression that I said that ;)?? I meant that you want build a new Sub to replace the existing Yamaha SUB :p !!

Am not sure with an 8" you can go F3 25Hz or -6dB 25Hz !! unless you use the 8" driver that I've posted in my earlier post !

10" with Linkwitz transform sounds more realistic to me,Don't mind ! I do have some drivers in mind,so when you come we can talk bout that !

So I am planning to go for a replacement woofer.

He has already given a proper answer ! if you use the 4Ohm driver then the Amp will be overloaded a bit and will under stress ! So it might be a good idea to look at something with 8Ohm rating !

Else you may have to go for Dual Voice version with 2 4Ohms coils !! that is more complex for someone like you so leave it aside !

I've already given you the options,There's isn't any brand in India which has a regular production with models numbers and such for me to give you the details !! so just have to do some trial and error !!

If all this sounds too complicated then do as I said earlier, send the driver to me and I will get it re-coned for you ;)!

Regards.

My apologies, I did not read previous post correctly.

well anechoic would be right.. but I'm looking at a little (lot) of help from room gain.. like how car subs with an anechoic f3 of ~45hz (or more) manage ~ 20hz f3 in car.

as an example --

http://www.jbl.com/resources/Brands...cuments/en-US/BoxesandParameters/GTO 804D.pdf

check out the sealed box response (modelled and typical in car) and the cone excursion.

of course a even a small room would give less gain than the car... but.. my thinking was on those lines..

hmm... maybe i should restate my requirements as f3 of 40hz. and linkwitz

nuff said.. this will be really boring for others.. so.. till we meet..

Thanks for your offer, I will definitely think about it if I am not able to find anything here, only concern is the shipping charges and damage in transit.

How about Bolton or Peerless drivers ?

Thanks kapvin for the explanation.

Dear Shaken soul,

If I've understood you correctly, all you are looking for is a 8" woofer which would fit in the box and give you loud bass..

here is one suggestion..

in Bhagirath place behind lajpatrai market there is a Bolton dealer called silvertone electronics. they should be able to help you. specify 8ohm.

the bolton naming convention would like 20KW22 where 20 is the speaker size(20cm=8").. k is the model, w for woofer 20 for the higher powered version and 2 of 8ohms (1=4ohms and 3=16ohms)

look at the kw or lpw series (if they exist) or just ask the dealer for recco.. should cost less than a 1k.. once you have a workable solution maybe you could sent your original woofer to soundsgreat for a recone!

I observed from the video that the rubber gasket/sorround of your woofer cone is broken. You can see it while playing... at bottom end of right side..

Hmmm...are you sure ? I have inspected it closely and nothing broken is visible with the naked eye

Anyways, I went to Lajpat Rai Market today and looked at Bolton speakers, totally unimpressive and built quality was pathetic, decided against it. Have contacted Corrson for their peerless drivers, waiting for a response.

There seems to be a hair line crack in the bottom right portion in the rubber surround. It further opens up when you play the video.. ie during the excurtion of sub.... just crossing the Y of "you tube" logo in the video..
However physical verification is must.

cheers
