I would like to use my laptop as media player (preferable audio and sometimes video ) and would like to hear the sounds through a Bose 5.1 channel sound system or anything if similar to Bose.
Can you pls suggest me a model with Indian price and also tell me whether its possible to connect my laptop output to external speaker system and how (which cord needed)
thanks in advance

Instead of doing this, why don't you get a WD Live TV Hub. It is a media player with 1 TB hard disk and can be connected to a TV and Home Theatre. All the movies and music can be stored into it. You will not have to keep a computer running all the time!

To get 5.1, your laptop should have HDMI out or SPDIF out. The latter is rare in laptops. If you don't have these outputs, then you will need to buy USB sound cards with analog 5.1 out or SPDIF out. You will also need a decoder or AVR to decode the 5.1 sound if HDMI or SPDIF is used.

My laptop does have HDMI output, next is what ?

You will need an AVR and a compatible 5.1 speaker system. Or you can consider HTIBs like Onkyo 3400, Denon 1312xp etc. What is your budget?

In this budget - best option will be Denon 1312XP HT setup or a similar Yamaha or Onkyo setup. The budget may get stretched a little. I bought a Denon 1312XP for a friend for 30K. Decent for the money - has the same AVR-1312. The speakers are not very good, but you can upgrade speakers as you go forward.

or what else do you suggest me in that budget
I need a decent sound

Ashish is right, your budget would not sufficient for a Bose. You may start with an entry level Onkyo or Yamaha HT pack by slightly extending your budget!

I think more to the point is room size.. are you in a small room .. in a temp accomodation or are you looking for decent speakers for your laptop in your personal den? I used to have a pair of altec lansings without a sub for my desktop .. some 5 years back... when bullets were reloaded or after firing a gun the blank shell dropped on the ground it was so real .. pretty cheap speakers but awesome for what they did..

Quite true - I had the Altec Lansing ATP3 a few years ago and they did a decent job , particularly for movies.Although,I did realize that they were no match for even my current low end Audioengines when it came to music.

I need it for my 20 X 25 hall and I mentioned I will prefer to listen music most of the time, my media source would be my laptop, and by decent I meant good vacals along with good bass -- not a boom boom type but a good tight bass that would touch the heart and it should be produced at a low volume.

Now suggest me speakers for these requirements in the budget mentioned, if Bose falls into this budget I will definitely go for it

NB : anything you suggest should be available in India (Kolkata)

From your earlier posts, the requirement appeared to be for 5.1 setup. Now your requirement appears to be a 2.1 active computer speakers. A point to clarify - do you want true surround sound or not? If you mostly want to listen to music, and don't want surround sound - a 2.1 active speaker system will be good enough and a decent one can be bought in the budget - even the bose companion 5. Audioengine A5 is another excellent option (no subwoofer, but you can always add the Audioengine sub at a later stage). It will be much better than Bose and around the same cost. You can order online from bajaao.

However, considering you room size and if you are not sitting close to your speakers - you will need a Stereo Amp and Floorstanding speakers. Check out sonodyne in kolkata. I am sure they will be able to put something together for you in 20 - 30 K.

there is nothing like bose dude. Don't spend on anything if bose is what you want. You would be guilt ridden and then later end up buying bose.
However, if you listen to these folks here, and take a demo of other avr+speakers, you may throw away your bose soon.

I hope you have demoed bose speakers that you are taking as your ideal speakers?

your room size is big. In chroma south ex and in TGIP mall noida - the demo rooms of bose are really small - I think less than 8x8. your room is 7-8 times larger, you may end up not liking the same speakers at home.

Guys, yesterday i auditioned some speakers in Bose showroom is somajiguda and must say i am very disappointed with Bose....I am sorry guys....maybe the problems was me..but the speakers sounded clear and punchy bass but somehow the sound overall sounded like artificial and like in hindi they say 'banavati' . I wanted to buy Acoustimass for my computer for music but seems like i will spend money on a pair of BS speakers.

ya I heard Bose companion 5 sounds like a 5.1 channel
tell me what would be the cost for it ?
another thing I would like to clarify....
currently I am using laptop as music source and using Sony RV 5 (2600 watts) as an amplifier through AV cord, will I get better sound with companion 5 ? and also tell me can companion 5 be directly connected to laptop ?
or with this kind of set up anything else from bose will be a better option ?

Bose companion 5 doesn't "sound" anywhere like 5.1 ch. nothing except a real 5.1 (2 front, 1 centre, 2 surrounds, 1 sub-woofer) can sound like it.

the companion 5 just tries to create a pseudo surround sound by throwing sound through the curved speaker cabinet. similar thing is used in their 201 and 301s as well. but if you listen to it next to a proper full range speaker (even without a separate woofer) you will find that the sound from comp.5 is missing out on a lot of lower freq. detail and the sound is very "tinny".

I have heard this speaker set for quite long at their store in atria mall, mumbai and came to the conclusion that they don't sound much different from multimedia speakers available from say erstwhile Mercury or iBall etc. Infact some of the Altec lansing speakers sound better considering their price. Why pay 25K for a sound that can be heard from a speaker costing 2.5k.?
