First time poster, long time lurker. First let me say I am a total newbie when it comes to hifi equipment and I am on a very limited budget (wife, 2 kids = broke) and so I am trying to figure out the best receiver for the B&W DM601 S3 speakers. I have read the following thread:

http://www.hifivision.com/surround-...cievers-pairing-b-w-dm-601-3s-b-w-center.html

which makes me lean towards getting a Yamaha receiver. I am looking at the RX-V371 or RX-V471 but they really look like the same receiver except the 471 has better surround support. This receiver is going to a downstairs living room with the B&W's as fronts and a really crappy Sony center channel (yes I want to swap out eventually so lets ignore that for now.) There are no surrounds, and only have 3 things plugging into this (Apple TV, Rega RP1 TT, TiVo). So I don't need a lot of inputs I just want something that will drive these speakers as my Harman Kardon AVR 235 (yes its not great) finally died so I have a green light to replace it just don't want to spend a ton of money. I look forward to your suggestions, thanks for reading my post!

I recently found a catch in RX371. These do not have pass through for anything. So you will have to switch on the AVR in order to pass signal to an different output. Meaning more electricity. A good RCA or HDMI switch will cost you around 2.5k (in India)). RX V471 will cost you 4K (in India) more than 371 with GUI, Passthrough, a bit more power per channel. Speaker A & B on remote are just for show (basically same remote for higher models).

Not sure if yamaha receivers you mentioned are good pairing with B&W's. Generally those speakers need good power to drive them to full potential. I'd say look for receivers with more power or go for a good pre-power combo.

You are in US, why dont you check out the used route, audiogon etc. Or look for discount options, refurbished, open box buy etc and try to get a better receiver. There are quite a few sites where you can get cheaper avrs.

Set your AVR to use 4.1, it will send the center channel sounds to the mains (called as phantom center) and get rid of the sony center channel. You will enjoy the voices a lot better. No center channel is better than a bad center channel.

If you are in US, would suggest if you can try out NAIM or NAD, from what i've heard in my research about my setup b&w sound wonderful when paired with something like these. As these dont compromise on power consumption. they might be slightly costly, butif you can go the used/re-furbished route these coule be well worth it.

In my setup i am quite happy with Yamaha so far.

Thanks
