Hi,

Looking for good set of surround speakers to complete my 7.1 setup. Setup as below

Receiver : Onkyo NR906
Fronts : Usher Be-718 DMD
Center : Usher Be - 616 DMD
Budget : 20K

Listened to S-520 usher speaker as surround option but the speaker appears to be too big for surround purposes (and as such it is supposed to be a bookshelf so not keen on paying the premium for surround purposes).

Recommendations welcome.

Thanks

Aviano 1 (18K pair)
Bose AM 161 (11K Pair) - can be wall mounted
Yamaha NSP8900 (5.5K) - can be wall mounted --> I am using the same for 7.1
Polk Tsi 100
Also I saw a very sleek looking model of KEF for 28K/pair in profx almost as thin as a wall painting. I do not remember the model. Aesthetic value is immense, and can be wall mounted.
There are many satellites though if you are open for them. Like CA Minx.

the warfedales are good options
so are the paradigm cinema series
and so are PSB alphas

I own the JBL Control One's as surrounds. They can be wall mounted and sound good too. They should be yours for about Rs 7.5k ot thereabouts. Will save you some money too.

As per the rule the surround speakers should be a matched up pair to your front and center speakers. If you buy a different brand then there would be no tonal and timbre matching because of the diffrent drivers(tweeters & mids) used in your front and rear speakers.

though the above is true
do you actaully know how much % surrounds work while watching a movie?

most estimates put it at roughly 15% (they are only fillers)
tonal and timbre matching can be neglected in my opinion

the centres that do much higher % duty are more important to macth

Generally satelites are bright (At least my experience with Cambridge Audio Minx says so). Using satelite surround with big bookshelf like Usher BE-718 as Fronts and Centre may not be a good combination.

Although I didn't listen to Wharfdale bipolar surround, but they may be better matched compared to satellite surrounds. Or one can go for small bookshelf like PSB alfa. They will perform well, I have heard it at Lakozy.

@magma
do you know that if you are listening to bluray hd audio or music in dolby prologic II modes the surround channels are active for almost all the time.
And he would obviously not want a fighter jet to sound like one when its on the front channels and sound like a scooter when it flies over to the back surround channels.

P.S.: silk dome tweeters and aluminium domes will never sound same one is soft other being brighter.
PP cone , kevelar cone , paper cone mid bass drivers all sound different with similar frequencies.

.

are you seriously implying other brands would sound like scooters instead of fighter jets?

timbre and tone matching rarely needs to be done for surrounds ( unless youre actaully looking to match two drstically and typically different KIND of speakers - something like the sort of electrostats, planars sats etc)

they are only accompaniments to your centre and mains
sorry thats my opinion
and i stand by it

Dear magma , the next time you visit a multi brand av outlet's demo room plz ask the demo person to switch between different brands of surrounds while keeping the LCR's same.Repeat the same demo clip on different setups u ll hear the difference.
You cant match B&W nautilus 802 as fronts and bose satellites as surrounds can you ?

All,

Based on the info presented in this thread I visited Yamaha outlet on Indira Nagar. I auditioned their NS-B700 speakers and found it to be of the right size and price for my need. Completed the purchase, in the process of setting it up.

Deeply appreciate the inputs from all members here. One point that I mentioned in my opening post is that the matching surround recommended for my setup (S-520) was too big for my surround need and beyond my budget. That is the reason I was looking for alternative options w.r.t surround speaker selection. I am more of a music kind of person with occasional interest in movies (80-20).

Need to see how it sounds in my setup.

Once again thanks to all for the inputs.

regards
snath
