Tata Sky HD Surround Sound Not Receiving

I have a Tata Sky HD STB connected to my Sony Bravia LED16.9 TV through a HDMI cable. When I switch on the TV to receive the Tata Sky signal; the TV screen indicates the input as "1080i Stereo". Should it not be 7.1 Surround Sound instead of Stereo?

Can someone educate me ?

Your Sony Bravia has only 2 speakers. So it is not going to receive 7.1 sound from Tata Sky HD STB. Anyways, 7.1 sound is not being offered on any channel as far as I know.

For obtaining 5.1 surround sound, you need an AVR with 5.1 speakers.

Direct connection to TV will only draw out stereo sound from the STB.

Its quite simple actually. if a TV does not have 5.1 speakers to direct a 5.1 signal , it obviously is down converting all signal it receives to 2.0. Hence any signal given to a TV via any kind of connection will be shown as normal stereo sound only.
