TataSky SD + Denon 1911: How to go about it?

Hi Folks,

I have recently bought a Denon 1911 and am currently looking for a pair of FS. The search for FS is being detailed in a separate thread. This thread is for me to understand what is that I should be looking at when I have connected my TS SD STB with 1911.

I tried using 1911 yesterday for the first time and tried the connections as follows:

TataSky SD STB --> AVR (through composite video + LR audio cables)
AVR --> TV (HDMI)

Now when I switched on the devices, I was able to get the video on my TV but no audio. Is the reason for lack of audio due to the input to AVR being analog but the output expected is digital (through HDMI)? I am a noob on this one but I believe 1911 supports upconverting? Is it only for video?

And my second query was more on the video that was streaming through my TV. It looked bad ! Somehow, AVR was processing the video in a way in which the SD was not looking good on my TV. It was to the contrary as I was hoping 1911 will upscale my SD and make it look good

Any help on this one will be most appreciated.

If the input signal source i too low when upscaled will be very sharp, Audio u need to check in the input assign menu of the AVR..

Which TV do you have? Usually the television will have a better upscaler as compared to the receiver. Hence, when you connect the STB directly to the TV, it will be the TV which will upscale, which will seem better. When you are connecting via the receiver, the receiver upconverts (composite video to HDMI) and upscales (480i to 1080i) [Not sure if your receiver does this] the video signal, hence the TV cannot upscale further.

Regarding your audio problem, it might be an analog/digital problem. According to this link, Denon receivers upconvert video but not audio from analog to digital. Have you set the "HDMI Audio Out" option to TV? If you're still not getting audio via the TV, then it is confirmed that it is an analog/digital problem.

Thanks for the input. Yes, as I did some further research after posting my query, I came across the "fixed display" term where I realized that my TV may probably be already doing the upscaling of the SD transmission !

I have a full HD Sammy 40" TV so I would presume the SD transmission is already upscaled to 1080p? If so, I guess plugging in AVR in between makes no sense. Btw, my AVR is denon 1911 so it does upscale (and upconvert too). Why the video is getting distorted is something I will need to understand but I guess my primary query on video quality is addressed.

I need to check out the HDMI Audio out option and it might be the reason for no audio on TV. Will check and confirm.

why are you using composite cables to connect from tatasky HD to AVR ? use a HDMI instead, it will carry both audio and video

As my query has been resolved, saw your posted comment only recently. I am using composites to connect tatsky to AVR as I have a STB box and not a HD box

It's really waste when you put good amount of money in receiver and full HD tv and still runing SD , go for HD setup box and enjoy the new era of PQ .

Trust me, it is on cards for a while. Just that I haven't got to it yet due to some other schedule issues. And it is not that I have not been enjoying the new era of PQ if I go by my blu-ray buying spree

In my humble opinion, it is a complete waste of effort to pair TataSky SD STB with Denon AVR - or far that matter any SD with an AVR.

1. The Denon 1911 AVR is very poor in upscaling. You will get an even worse picture.
2. The SD STB outputs stereo only. And stereo will not sound good on 5.1 even when used with Dolby Prologic/PL-II, etc.

But if you must pair the two, I will advise not to use HDMI. Just use the AVR pass-thru feature and connect the composite video and audio to TV.
