To me CD was the "Most Impressive" since it brought Tru Hi Fi quality to the mass market, at an unbeatable price.

It also provided a taste of Hi Quality music reproduction to the Layman, who often knew little better that shabby records, Muffled tapes and AM Radio .....

I wonder if (or when) this technology will be available in consumer market. There have long been tape/cartridge formats unknown outside of IT departments/suppliers.

Agreed - The jump from tapes to CD was perhaps the biggest. After that it was a question of cramming as much more data into the disc as possible. But CD was a quantum jump as it meant that the player too had to change. The entry barrier was a bit high, but it still succeeded at becoming popular over a period of time.
