The Saga of Super V - I

At long last my recently finished Open baffle DIY Super V are punching away ! The story of these is nothing short of a thriller or rather it has transformed from a slow boring novel to a nail biting thriller.

The Super V is an Open Baffle Speaker from GR Research of USA, incorporating a pair of Open Baffle subwoofers driven by Rhythmik Audio Servo Subwoofer amplifier. The mids and highs are handled by a co-axial Woofer again in an open baffle with a tweeter whose back is opened up.

Background:

It was in early 2011, Danny Richie of GR Research offered a bargain pricing on his Kits which was picked up by our good Captain ( Rajesh ). Initially this offers was not open for his higher end Speakers including Super V. However, as the frustratingly slow momentum gathered on the Forum, Danny kept sweetening the deal. It was tied to a minimum Order value. This in itself was a stumbling block, as a group buy and group import had to be done under one bill of lading. However, the Indian Customs rules do not permit this. Capt. Rajesh had to pull all the stops and sue the good will of his being an army man to eventually get a special permission to do this.

On the other hand, Danny offered 10% discount above and beyond his already low prices. Then he offered free shipment upping the total minimum Order amount and also included his entire portfolio of products.

Decision:

At this point I got interested in his last pair of Super Venuette V-2 Open Baffle Speakers.
V-2

These use a pair of Eminence 12 Open Baffle Subwoofer Drivers driven by Plate Amps and the top was a 8 P-Audio Coaxial Woofer. After much deliberation, I eventually decided on the flagship Super V Kit which received rave reviews and utilized Servo Subwoofers and larger Cao-axial woofers with unique open tweeter. Of course all this was at much more than twice the cost of the V-2.

Super-V

My logic was that it would be rather expensive to import a Kit weighing in excess of 90 kgs. as individually it could only be air-freighted. Also the group buy presented a unique once in a life time opportunity.

Shipment:

After quite some delay, the Shipment arrived. The good Captain had to run from pillar to post to get the consignment cleared. Which he managed but also vowed never to get involved in such a venture again !
Once the Kit was delivered to Captain Rajesh, not wanting to trust the Courier Service, I drove down the following Sunday to collect it from him.

More to come.

Jayant,

Glad to see them all finished up. Super finish. Awaiting listening impression and comparison with your existing setup.

Regards

@ mpw: Thanks !

@Naturelover: Glad you like them !

@ Baswamin:

These have been playing for about two weeks. There have been lot of hiccups that made the story a thriller. I am unable to use the Tube amp due to its low damping characteristic. So right now playing through an SS Emotiva Amp. I always played my MLTL through the Tube Amp and find it to be far better than through a SS amp. So this is a bit of unfair comparison.

For pure Vocals I prefer my MLTL - Tube Amp combo over yet not broken in - Super V - SS. I am attempting fix the low damping issue as I know Tube Amp will make the Super V shine.

Bass is different matter altogether. It leaves me speechless. The Bass is tight and deep. One needs o experience it. I feel Servo Open Baffle Bass is difficult to verbalize.

Congratulations Jayant ji. A nicely written prelude. I hope you would post all the build pics but more importantly, I hope you would be able to sort out the issues of connecting them to your Lyrita GM70 tube amp.

The passive crossovers feeding to the coaxial driver needs to be looked at I guess.

excellent opening to the saga Jayant.....waiting for more. Nice pictures too.

kuks1,

Here you go !

The Saga of Super V -II

Continuing the story further:

Preparation:

The Kit as received and weighing about 90 kgs. comprised of 6 boxes with boxes in box and thus totaling about 10 individual boxes.

While Danny took care to supply all the hardware needed to put the Speaker together, the Plans at best were sketchy in nature. The CAD drawings needed to be developed for CNC cutting work. Also there were some elements in the original design changed / modified. I have someone to help me with the CAD and 3D design. We started designing a couple of months after the arrival of the Kit. It took further 4 months to complete the design between our other occupations, travel and weekends working.

I settled for a design with relatively cleaner side flanks.

I believe it was early 2013 when the working drawings were ready.

The side Flanks are an important function to play in reinforcing the Speaker against the substantial pressure developed by the dual subwoofers. I pondered over the availability of suitable sizes of Planks of 40 mm thickness. Eventually two possibilities emerged, Teak and Steamed Beech. Of the two the later was more reliable in quality and was chosen. Most other parts were to be made in Marine Grade MDF and the base in Plywood. Of course the bow between the Co-axial and subwoofers would have to be in Steamed Beech too.

These were discussed with my carpenter who is an old timer and owns a good CNC woodworking facility. All was good to go and it appeared that the Speakers should be built and working in a three months.

Only if wishes were horses!

More to Come !

Hi Jayant ji, it was heartening to hear that you could locate the issue to the Lyrita amp and could get it fixed by Viren in double quick time.

Looking forward to a brief review (if not a detailed one that is)
