Hi,

I recently got a Denon Turntable. Since my amplifier (CA650A) did not have a Phono input I was using the in built Phono Equaliser of the TT and connected to the AUX on Amp. However I noticed that the volume levels were very low and I had to crank it up to 12 o clock position.

Then I purchased a Phono Stage NAD PP3. However even now I am facing the same issue. Through Phono the volume is very very low even with the volume knob turned all the way upto 50%.

Any ideas/suggestions please?

Cheers
Sushanth

I am new into TTs, so I may be wrong:

  • Check if your cartridge is MM or MC
  • Check if your Phono Stage is suited for your type (MM/MC)
  • Make a note of the output voltage
  • If your Phono Stage has these settings, adjust it

I faced a similar issue when I connected my turntable to a Project Phonostage with no settings. I had to turn the volume to 2' O Clock position to listen. On the Lehmann Black Cube, one can change the settings using jumper switches. BTW, my cartridge is a low output Moving Coil cartridge. Your situation may be similar.

Hi Santhosh,

Thanks a lot for replying.

1. It is a MM cartridge
2. The Phono Stage supports both MM and MC and has separate inputs and selector switch. I connected to MM and selected MM on the switch
3. I am not sure how to find out the output voltage.

The spec sheet says 2.5mV(is it too less?)

What cartridge are you using? Get the specs from the manufacturer's site. The specs will contain the recommended load resistance and impedance. Then check the phonostage's manual to set the required gain and impedance.

I am using a basic Denon 29T. The phono stage does not have any options to make any changes to the gain and impedance. There is nothing in the manual regarding this.
