Tweaks to my Technics SL-23 Turntable

I am also thinking of modifying a Technics SL 20 which has been gathering dust for the last couple of years. The bottom portion of the plinth has fully disintegrated. So the top portion was retained and the arm was fully dismantled and serviced. The ball bearings were not even moving. The main bearing also needed regreasing . I have used an old Dual's plinth to house the TT and used the 4 spring suspensions of the Dual plinth to isolate the TT. It certainly sounds different from the original SL 20/23 . I would like to infer that the spring isolation may be the difference between the original and this. More on that after I play it for a while. Anyway, I was inspired by Hari's efforts. I will eventually like to make a plinth when time permits. I will post pictures later. Thanks

I am posting a few pictures of the Technics SL 20 taken during its refurbishment.

After a pause of 6 to 7 months, the TT bug has again bitten me.

I purchased an original EPC271-II cartridge from FM some 5 months ago and yesterday ordered a Pinnacle EPS270ED stylus (NOS - Dry stored for over 30 years in original pack as per the post) for the same. Also i adjusted the Phono pre-amp gain from the current 36 dB (@1KHz) to 43.5dB (@1KHz) by modifying the feedback resistor. This was done because the current Ortofon cartridge has an output of 5mV, but the Technics cartridge can give upto 3.5mV. I will be receiving the stylus in another 2 weeks and will post impressions.

Stylus arrived today, will mount, calibrate with protractor and let know impressions later.

After the inital break-in, i did an apples to apples comparison between the Ortofon (OM-30 aftermarket Tonar) and the Technics (EPC270ED) aftermarket Pinnacle cartridge. I will use the following adjectives to describe them,

Ortofon OM-30 aftermarket Tonar stylus - Bright, Edgy, compressed mids and highs, low bass, narrow sound stage

Technics EPC271CES/EPS270ED aftermarket Pinnacle - Neutral, Smooth, Uncompressed dynamics for mids & highs, tight bass, wide sound stage.

Conclusion: The Ortofon is no match for the Technics and infact the both should not even be compared.

Last weekend I refurbished my Technics TT with a new dab of vinyl sheet (Courtesy diyaudiocart) and a new isolation table. The spring feet of the TT now sits on the isolation table and the TT gets four solid rubber spongy balls for further damping of vibrations.
