I recently bought a WD External HDD 2.5" 1 TB which has USB 3.0 Support.
However the cable that was given to connect between the HDD and other USB supported devices is too short. Do we get longer cable for this?
If so where and how much would it cost?

I am using MX thick USB cable, also a Local silver color(thick)cable. Both work fine with 1 TB ext drive.

I have a Toshiba --- with exactly the same problem. It just reaches from the top of the PC case down to the USB port. I guess that the cable was designed to be used on a laptop.

The trouble is that there is still not much USB3.0 about. Last time I was at IT Depot, I was a bit shocked at the price of a USB 3.0 cable and I don't think they even had much of a choice. I guess there are cheaper prices...

How much did you buy this and from where?
These Cables are available at CTC @ Rs 275 onwards depending upon the quality. I bought a cable for Rs 399 and it works fine with my HDD.
Any specific brand and the shop in CTS from where you bought and also which External HDD do you have?

I don't think I will need a USB 3.0 Cable. USB 2.0 should suffice.

I primarily need this cable to connect my External HDD to my Samsung TV so USB 3.0 should not matter. And the current USB 3.0 wire length will suffice to connect to my PC.

Male female cable is just an extender. Plug one part in pc and leave the other and you get a usb port near your hard disk. Then plug the end of short usb cable in the extender.

Alternatively if you want a single cable you can search for micro usb to usb cable on ebay. Last time I checked they were not too expensive.

Your hard disk has micro usb or mini usb?

But the other end of your hdd cable should be a male usb pin that plugs into a pc usb port and you can connect it to the extender cable. By M shaped cable I think you are referring to type b pin like the ones used in printer.

I have the USB extension cable already with me. But the problem is the TV doesn't recognize my External HDD when I connect it using the USB extension cable. Only Pen Drives are getting detected. Hence I have to go through the arduous task of connecting using the small cable.

And the wire you given for links is not the one that I'm looking for.

The "PC" end of a USB 3.0 cable will fit into a USB 2.0 port. This gives backward compatibility. Consequently, if only connecting to USB 2, then either direct connection or a male/female extension should work fine.

The USB 3 disk end (assuming my tosh is industry-standard, and not some wretched proprietary connection. I hope that's a safe assumption to make) is very different to USB 2 mini or micro. It is as wide as the PC end, but only half the hight. It is divided into two parts, and could be said to look like an "m." No USB 2 cable would fit it.

Err, worth a thousand words...

(Sorry, the Defy+ is a nice phone with a lousy camera. The it's-USB-3 give-away on the left-hand plug is that the plastic insert is blue.)

I need USB3 to USB3, as I am connecting to a USB 3 port on the PC, so a USB 2 extension won't do.

Then USB 2 extension cable as mentioned should be good for you. If you can get one, a USB 3 extension would be "future-proof".

At least for the USB-2 extension, your local electronics or computer shop should oblige. I have even put one on Wife's shopping list, and yes, she came back with the right thing.

Guys any suggestions on where I can get this cable?

1.from china airmail via Web..1click
2.local market if any FM knows ..1drive

Guys i need a seagate go-flex cable in <300Rs,sources??

got one via china, fits very tight.need one like original(costs 1.6k ..too much)

@Thad, that cable is indeed industry standard. But lots of luck finding a spare cable when you need one :(

@OP, you need a USB 3.0 extension cable. The regular USB 2.0 Extension cables will not work. I bought couple of these a bit back for use with my USB 3.0 Thumb Drives. They work perfectly with the thumb drives.

I'm not 100% sure if they will work with a USB 3.0 2.5" HDD. I can confirm in a week, though. I just bought a 1TB WD 2.5" HDD online (7.5% eBay discount coupon FTW!). I intend to use it with the extension cable when it arrives.

I just got a USB3 extension cable for S$10 in Singapore. Surely available here, but probably not at Sim Lim prices! I am not able to keep my USB3 drive on the desktop rather than on the PC top.

You can get the Lacie branded one from here

Theitdepot - LaCie USB 3.0 A Male To A Female 1.2m Cable (130986)

Given that most of the ones I saw in Singapore were S$15, this one, a branded cable, seems pretty reasonable at Rs.655. :)

Can you give more details? Maybe links?

This is true USB 3.0 extender cable and hence one will get the super speed unlike the USB 2.0 extender cables.
Not sure if I would want to invest anything around Rs 600. Also since it will be connected to the HDTV I don't think USB 3.0 is going to be relevant.

If I connect the HDD to my Desktop then I can understand going for USB 3.0 but since this will be connected to the TV that doesn't matter. So please let me know if I will be able to get a wire with the same connectors especially the one which connects the HDD.

HDD <--hdd-supplied-lead--> >--female-USB2-to-Male-USB2-extension--> Any USB A socket.

The performance will be USB2. USB2 extension is available at any electronics or computer store.
