Yes, dedicated CD players do sound better. You can be on the lookout for used CD players on this forum itself. PBR had one up for sale sometime back.

The usual problems are with the lens/transport mechanisms.

Dear friend,

Basically DVD player are made for Movie purpose, so Vocal too hard on that to listen Dialog
And for that some high frequency are compressed on DVD player
CD player are made for music, vocal soft and music not irritate you
You can enjoy music maximum time

Hi,

A dedicated CD player generally always sounds better for music. CA and Marantz are two brands which have a nice set of CD players at budget prices. However, the budget ones (VFM) do not usually come up for sale as used products. I generally find more expensive ones for sale for 2nd hand use. (is it because the more expensive ones are bought by people, at least a fraction of whom are more keen to upgrade?)

As saikat has pointed out, the usual problem is with the transport.

What sort of budget you are looking at?

with dedicated cd player you will be entering into audiophile equipments
it will be good idea IMO if you love music . But beware
if you dont have the matching good quality amp and speakers [20k+] ... you may not feel significant difference

would just a amp (eg denon 1909) be suffice ? or does one need a "musical amp" (marantz) with hi end speakers? im thinking of going for a dedicated cdp but would not be able to know what it would sound like on my current setup. Does the CA 340 cost 40k btw ?

see the whole chain CDP>AMP>Speaker has to be proper
hence i told 20k+ investment is needed . ..that too with pre-owned amp and CDP,speakers..

CA 340 may be 9k if i am correct.
new CDP like CD5001 costs 12.5k+ [on offer]
if you want still better ones with valves try MHZS line
The model is CD88 it costs about 298 Euros so Roughly around 20K

then you will be going on upgrade route to get better sound ....adding better equipment.........+ $$$

Hi try adding the DAC to your existing dvd player to enhance the overall sound quality and you will be benefited with more options for the connectivity with other audio gear !
