Hi,

I have two 6 ohms speakers with me from my previous 2.1 channel multimedia speakers. I plan to connect them directly to my AVR to form 5.1 channel. Pls answer the following.

- My AVR is set to 8 ohms and the front speakers are 8 ohms as well. If I connect these two 6 ohms speakers to the AVR and leave the AVR setting to 8 ohms, will it harm in short term (3-4 months) i.e before I get proper surround speakers?
- Also the speakers do not have any crossover inbuilt in them, so if I connect them directly to the AVR will it blow-off. I have an option to adjust the equilizer in the AVR. If I adjust the equilizers and set -10 dbl for frequencies less than 65hz, will it work?
- Any other aspect I should be concerned about.

I want to watch 'Mr & Mrs Smith' in 5.1, that will be telecast tonight 2300 hrs, Movies Now:) Quick guys.

BTW, I dont know if the speakers go below 4 ohms. I cant expect so much information from some 'Microlab' speakers. These are 3" drivers, I guess these are 'full range', as they dont have any additional tweeters attached.

I read this on web, so pls take it with a pinch of salt.

When you change the impedance from 8 to 4 ohms, AVRs will reduce the voltage swings by almost half to stop too much current flowing into speakers. While this is good for AVR, it might result in clipping when driven loudly which is really bad for speakers.

On the other hand, if you connect 4ohm speakers and set impedance to 8ohm, clipping risk is reduced but you might end up blowing AVR's fuse if driven loudly.

So depending on which one you love most, chose the lesser of the evils :D

Again, it is my internet gyan and I am no expert on this.

Cheers

set the speakers to small. that will highpass them. even if they are 6 ohms, these are surrounds and wont get much continuous power, so it should be ok. surrounds usually have about 15-20% content. dont play excessively loud and check the amp periodically to see if its getting hotter than usual.

rather than usign equalizers,

Choose speakers (Front) as "Small" in the speaker setting. and then choose sub out frequency at 90Hz or above (I hope you have subwoofer). This way , all the LFE signals below the chosen frequency will go to the sub only and your speakers will remain safe.

Don't worry about 6ohm impedance. The AVR should take it easily. However, they may sound louder than 8 ohm speakers if they are more sensitive. To equalize this, you can go into settings and adjust individual speaker level so that all are equal to your ear. If your AVR came with Odessey set up, use it to set the speaker levels optimally.

Let us know how was your movie experience.

Damn, the current was off and by the time it came, the movie was on its interval, I guess. Anyway will utilise it on other screens. Thank you guys!
