Vinyl I'm not listening to

Its very true, for beaten up records just have an additional tonearm on your rig or perhaps a separate turntable with a ceramic cartridge tracking at about 6-8 gms. The old records can still be enjoyed. If one is into DIY, one can try some simple filters with the ceramic phonostage (ceramic carts have ample gain for us to leverage) to reduce the harsh noises (with the loss of a bit of the highs). However if records are physically broken, cracked or have groove damage, then even this method cannot be used. Personally I have taken an alternate route with the same tracking force, but with a Shure M3D mag cartridge.
