What is your favorite raaga in hindustani or carnatic music?
Are there any musical compositions that you can share with us, that in your opinion distills the raaga?

Shivaranjini.
Maharajpuram Santhanam has created a Thillana composition in this raga, with a melodious rendition. The All India Radio wake-up tune, the tune that is broadcast first thing in the morning when the station begins, is in this raga. Several film songs in this raga, most notably one from the Tamil film, Apoorvaragangal!

Edit: I think the actress in the film was called Ranjani after the raga !

These are some of the major ragas in Carnatic.
1.Sankarabharanam.(Bilawal in Hindustani I believe.There are many great kritis in this raga.Most famous will be Swararagasudha,Endukku peddala,Manasu swadhina by Tyagaraja,sri dakshinamurte of Muthuswamy Dikshiter.

I came across this really well written article / blog post on Darbari Kanada.

The compositions mentioned in the post just blew me away - especially Pt. Ram Narayan on the Sarangi, and Ustad Amir Khan's version.

request members to recommend Audio CD's / artists for morning and evening raagas - hindusthani classical / hindusthani instrumental / south indian carnatic..

Normally play the sacred chants of shiva and MSS and sometimes Kishori Amonkar - Todi but want more inputs..

will appreciate some pointers..
