If you dont mind switching on a separate display every time for listening to music, HDD media player is best option. Look for one with optical out, so that you can add DAC in the future. If you dont mind the price take a look at this logitech SBT

You can check out the Pogo plug project for making a Linux based distro and streaming player which can be connected to a external DAC. It looks like a cheap solution for less than $60 (not sure the current price).

Thanks ...but true! What other piece of pure-consumer-level gear appreciates in value on being discontinued? I sometimes wonder of Logitech management might not have stockpiled them! Except that they dumped it because they don't understand it.

Probably you want ready-to-go on this, rather than cutting-edge, but there a number of initiatives seeking to replace the functionality of the Squeezebox. Take a look at Community Squeeze for instance
