Hi guys.

I bought this Onkyo HT-S590 home theater in 2007. After I bought my Onkyo HT-S5300 in June2010, it was lying unused so a friend took its AVR. Later on, he got transferred and took the AVR with him (with my permission). So, I am left only with the speakers.

Now I have 2 options:

1. I can sell/giveaway the speakers (I dont know if they have any value (sub-woofer is passive).
2. Buy an AVR and use them in my bedroom (my preferred option)

If I use them in my bedroom where I already have a media player, I will need to buy an AVR. But a normal AVR (without Dolby TrueHD/DTS-HD-MA) will not help me because most of my favorites movies are in HD audio formats (in hard disks) and a normal AVR does not decode Dolby TrueHD/DTS-HD-MA through optical/coaxial).

I dont want to spend too much on AVR because my main HT is good enough. I might be interested in AVRs like the ones packaged with HTIBs like Onkyo 3300/3400. Dont mind used also. I am not an audiophile, so, I will be happy with average sound quality.

What are the suggestions guys?

Specifications of the speakers are in this link:

get some used, old avr that supports external decoder input. decode the codecs in your pc and use the soundcard to output 5 channel analog, connecting to the avr.

You can look for Yamaha 371, denon 1312 or Onkyo 309. All should be around 20-22K. These support HD audio, ARC etc. Yamaha 371 comes with calibration mic, but I think it has no GUI. Denon 1312 has GUI, but no auto calibration option.

1) You can try and install the speakers in different parts of the house (living room, kitchen, dining etc) and connect to a basic BGM amplifier for whole house audio.

2) There are many custom installers where these kind of speakers are used in showrooms, restaurants etc

3) Get a basic AVR with 6-channel input (as suggested by doors666)

Thanks for your suggestions.

I don't want to decode my movies. They are too many (3x2TB HDDs) and I have 2 copies of all my hard disks as backup. So, I use the backup copy in my HDDs with bedroom media player directly connected to TV. I have build my collection over the years and after spending so much money. They work well in my Xtreamer Pro+Onkyo 5300 combo.

So, either I don't use these speakers or use with an AVR (with HD audio formats).

But as I said that I need a cost effective AVR with average sound quality. So what is your opinion about forgetting these speakers and buying an Onkyo 3300 (around 17-18k, if I search) or Onkyo 3400 for 25k or so?

Also the AVRs suggested by you will require me to buy an active sub-woofer (not sure).

See I am very confused.

Buy Pioneer VSX-521. You will get for around 16K in grey market.

Sounds interesting. :clapping:

Googling it. If you have information, does it need active sub ?

Edit: Yes, it needs active sub. Any suggestion for cheapest active sub ?

I have a pair of Wharfedale PPS-1 active loudpanel speakers. The subwoofer is active and also gives power to the picture frame speakers (70 W x 2). The sub is also 70 W.

Won't do your HT duty though!

Why not a get a plate amp and convert the passive sub into active. May be DIY gurus can help and give more info.

the decoding happens when you play the movie. you dont store it on hdd. decoding from hd audio to pcm and then converting to analog. Either your avr takes hd audio input, does the decoding and the conversion to analog. or your pc will do it, give the pcm to sound card, which will convert to analog and give you 5.1 analog out channels. but you are using a streamer, so that might not work. when you mentioned hdds, i automatically assumed htpc.

Will it not be too much for the bedroom ? I want it to be simple - an AVR with HDMI inputs from STB & media player and HDMI output to be TV and audio to 5.1 speakers without using coaxial/optical cable. :)

Not getting Pioneer VSX-521 in Delhi/Gurgaon. Any inputs from Delhi/NCR guys?

How about selling the speakers and buying an Onkyo 3300/3400?

In this case, how much should I expect for these 5.1 speakers?

Thanks. But it (Pioneer VSX-521-K) is coming to 20k.

Item: EUR 209.24
Packaging & Shipping: EUR 40.00
Advance payment of import fee: EUR 36.67

Total amount: EUR 285.91

Based on my experience I would say wait and watch. Just add this item to your shopping cart and keep checking the site. If the price goes down it shows in red when you visit your shopping cart. I had kept the yamaha rx-571 receiver in the shopping cart when the price was euro 399. In a week the price came down to 319 for a couple of days and again the price became 399. So as and when it hits the price you think is the lowest just order it immediately. The prices that I have quoted above are inclusive of vat which will be deducted based on the address that you give at the shipping time. So expect a reduction of some 25% on the value of the item.

Thanks

Thanks, I have added it in cart and saved the page in my favorites.

BTW, 209.24 is the price after deducting VAT, otherwise current price is 249.00 Euros.
