Now that my xtreamer pro is on its way to me, time to arm myself with some storage. Need your advice on which HDD (type, model, capacity) to pick up.

Xtreamer apparently supports upto 2 TB, should I go for a 2 TB HDD? how reliable are they?

I don't have any data now but need to future proof myself...right line of thought?

I am thinking to buy WD cavier green 1 TB 5400 RPM 64 MB cache WD10EARS model for now. It is 3650 INR on ebay with door stap warranty. I'll add 2 TB after a year when it will touch rock bottom.

The way industries moving, I am sure xt pro will be useless after 3 years. So think of immediate few years only.

It is better you convert this thread into XT pro owner thread. I am sure we will have lots of discussion in future. My XT pro is delivered in USA. It will be with me in first week of July.

Thanks...do I need to take care of any specific thing? like RPM, SATA/IDE etc? Any particular brand/make you suggest?

xTreamer and Pro both gets heat up, that's why xTreamer needs sidewinder and we are yet to see wide community feedback on pro.

Now in India, it will be a bigger problem since normal tempurature remains above 30 degree and during summer it goes to 45 in some areas.

It is better to have low RPM disk , i.e, not more than 5400 RPM. Try to look new generation model which are optimized for device use and uses less power as well as remains cool. That's why I recommanded WD cavier green which is low on cost and moderate on performance ( WD10EARS , 1TB 5400 RPM , 64 MB cache).

There are other players in competation but I have zeroed on this, because of better reliability of WD and door step warranty.

bought WD10EARS for 3570 Rs.

Local retailer quoted price of 3750 Rs. Since price from his shop was not much higher compared to ebay price ( only 50 Rs higher ), I decided to buy from him and booked one. He told me to pick up it a day after. I also told him that ebay price is lower compared to his price.
The other day when I went to pick up hard disk from his shop, he gave me for 3570Rs. including VAT + bill :) - Acme Computers Bangalore

perfect line of thought.

my experience with western digital in NAS has been good. and in price per GB equation the 1.5 TB version is in the sweet spot - @ a little over 5k

Hi,

I am using Seagate 1 TB along with my WD Live and it is going on fine. One of our esteemed members predicted that it will die on me soon and asked me 'to go figure' But the HDD is still going strong.

cheers,

well, you are lucky one. I have read on forums that seagate has more failure rate compared to others. Apart from that computer dealer clearly told me to go for WD when I asked if I have any other better option compared to WD. He told that Seagate has established as brand in India but truth is WD is better on performance and reliability. Finally its personal choice :)

Its always better going for a lower rpm sata disk. I have a 1.5TB Samsung 5400rpm (Movies) + 500GB Samsung (Music) + a few more (750GB).

For better pricing, SP Road is always better.
