I am a newbie and

I have finally made up my mind on

The Onkyo NR 609 reciever
and
Polk audio DSW pro 500,
I am also looking at the Wharfedale DIAMOND SW-150 Subwoofer however the polk DSW pro 500 has a better frequency response goes down till 23hz

the next step however is to look for good Speakers,
which is not too big and bulky and does not break the bank,
Infact smaller the better as my living room is already furnished and anything big and my wife will probably throw a fit and throw me out of the house along with the equipment even before my first anniversary.

I am looking for a 7 speaker setup

My room dimernsions are 14feet x 20feet

I have already bought the LG Infinia 47LW5600 LED TV

So i am on a tight budget.

Movies would be around 30% and music 70%
my music preferences are Slow Rock, ( Classic Rock 70s and 80s , Floyd, Dire Straits, Nazareth, Chris Rea etc) and instrumental

If you listen to music most of the time ( 70% of the time, as you said) , then buy a stereo amplifier ,Speaker and a CD Player. The Onkyo or any other receiver is not going to sound good for any type of music.

Buy amplifiers from companies like Arcam, MF, Cyrus and speakers from Dali, Epos, Morel etc.. Search and search and you will get good prices for the above said products.

Yes True,
However i need to fulfil my Ht needs as of now, and i zeroes in on the onkyo 609 because it would compliment my 3D requirements,
planning on buying a dedicated system for my music purposes later this year which i will probably install in my spare bedroom

Many options for speakers - Epos Epic 5/Focals/Polks/Monitor audio/Wharfedale (a forum favorite) but you have to audition and select the speakers which sounds good to your ears and fits your budget. So take all the valuable suggestions provided.

You will have to invest quality time is selecting the speakers

For excellent sound that won't break the bank, the 5 Star Award Winning Wharfedale Diamond 12.1 Bookshelf Speakers is the one to consider!
