why sign off with cheers?

^^ that said -

a few observations -

i would sign each post i made according to how i felt-

for example -

"hi Hiten, i like you very much" -

cheers - have a drink on me"

another (opposite) example-

grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr ! grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr! - i am going to bonk you guys! - and you (........... name of forum member) ) should stop believing that you have contributed to the forum - remember that millions are reading this, and if this is not enough motivation to please, i really do not know what is?

cold regards (and i hope that you reform yourself at the Borstal school).

ETIQUETTE AND DECORUM HAVE CERTAIN SET RULES - and with the written word, the predominant emotion of the writer MUST BE APPARENT when he/she signs off -

and having to say

"your posts are inane - please do not think you are clever" - CHEERS!! (i and the others are going to have a drink while you wallow in misery?)

that sounds abnormal.

Sorry for late reply. Thanks.

That's true. I am signing off by saying...
Best Regards and peace to all. :)

"the predominant emotion of the writer MUST BE APPARENT"

The predominant thought and emotion should be apparent in the text itself. There is no need to sign off every post with a set word.Endless repetition of any word renders that word meaningless.

I think much water has flown since. Whether you use any words or not should be the individual's choice. Further, a new thread regarding the usage of English is doing the rounds. Let these kind of threads die a natural death and let us all not glorify these threads by arguing over these things. After all India is a democracy and everybody has a point of view. This is how it is.

A rather long but nice way to sign off?

All experience is preceded by mind,
Led by mind,
Made by mind.
Speak or act with a corrupted mind,
And suffering follows
As the wagon wheel follows the hoof of the ox.
All experience is preceded by mind,
Led by mind,
Made by mind.
Speak or act with a peaceful mind,
And happiness follows
Like a never-departing shadow.

ye dillihifi -

i completely agree - for the Hoi polloi in this forum, and in general, each one might be allowed the latitude to sign off as he/she wants -

and nobody will notice enough to comment re that individual style.

but -

the leaders of the community have to show the way - they have to be paragons of virtue - they must set the example for the rest to follow.

and, if they stumble, they cannot be leaders - better people can rule in their stead.

Democracy! - for sure!:)

alert! - in the above comment, one last clarification -

LEADERS = MODERATORS

another wise man..whose undermentioned verse can be contorted to fit into the context of the current discussion dished out this limerick...

There was a man of Calcutta
Who coated his tonsils with butta.
Thus converting his snore
From a thunderous roar
To a soft, oleaginous mutter.

p.s. our shershah is for sure not a..
Wee sleekit, cow'rin tim'rous beastie
(with) O, what a panic in (his) breastie!

and, for sure, moktan -

"I'm truly sorry man's dominion
Has broken Nature's social union,
And justifies that ill opinion
Which makes thee startle
At me, thy poor, earth born companion
And fellow mortal!"

Moktan, i, really, feel that humankind is unkind - and that nature (and god's creatures) suffer because of us.

why did god impose this burden on us?

Once there was a wonderful man,
....he managed people best as he can.

Managed he did great sometimes,
....preaching beliefs failed him few times.

tho' few unjust things went past by him,
....but a gent was nudged by unneeded whim.

he said cheers cheers will do no harm,
....but the word finally lost its charm.

:D peace to all

If it is an original work........Bravo!!!! :clapping::clapping:
If it is not.....Nice Find!!! :eek:hyeah::eek:hyeah:

just realised that many posts here in the forum are in the nature of conversational exchanges........
so there is no real necessity to formalise those interchanges with a signing off remark..
i am however of the opinion that the signing off ritual- however inane and vapid- remained..
perhaps as a vestigial remnant and remembrance of those bygone days when letters were the main means of communication amongst 'strangers'...

A thousand apologies and no offense to anyone, I think what moktan is saying repetitive and irrelevant use of any sign off words like "cheers" "Best Regards" "Warmest Regards" "No offence" "Thousand Apologies" loses its meaning and value. for eg.

...........snipped...........

~ "My wife delivered a baby boy yesterday"
Thanks everyone

.............snipped............
Really these words have lost their meanings.:p
