Yal audio, italy??

Dear Miroflex buddy, Where do you get these kinds of information :eek:
I searched the net for Yal and i could not find any useful information. Dont be fooled by these sellers. First stop contacting too many sellers, Decide your amp and speakers and look for some genuine seller or HFV Members and buy it from him.

Thanks for the advice Malvai but its not really so simple. Allahabad used to have two dealers, one for Philips India and the other for Sonodyne till the nineteen eighties. Both have closed down. There are no dealers in used audio equipment as far as I have been able to find out. There may be a kabari or two who would be happy to sell you an HMV Fiesta. Nothing beyond that. A few listeners have one make rack systems (Sansui et al) which they treasure and won't sell.

Anyone here looking for used equipment can trawl the net or hunt in the metros.

The seller in question had listed a pair of floor standing speakers of a reputed make at an attractive price. When I telephoned him he said they had been sold but offered me the Yal speakers. I found nothing inherently improbable in his story in this age of outsourcing.

Anyway, now that you have come to my rescue once and since you dabble in used equipment, I seek your cooperation. I am looking for a used integrated amp with phono inputs on a budget of Rs. 40k and suitable floor standing speajers for around Rs. 30k.

Regards.

I think you can pickup an Arcam , Creek amps with Usher 718s,V 6series or EPOS (preowned) .

May be you can open a thread in wanted section . :)

Dear Soundofmusic,

The British used to refer to the countryside as the "mofussil". It should correctly have been "mufaasil", the Persian or Faarsi word for distant. Allahabad, the once proud capital city of the United Provinces of Agra and Oudh, has come down in the world. Commercial and industrial progress have passed it by. There was a time when you could walk into a shop and buy a Zeiss Ikon camera or a BSA Vee Twin motorcycle. The Lieutenant Governor of the province and the late Pandit Motilal Nehru of Allahabad were the owners of motor cars early in the century. These were perhaps the first cars in UP. Allahabad provided for international travel courtesy Imperial Airways on their London Sydney route. The first airmail service in the world (from Allahabad to Naini) was recently celebrated in its centenary year by the Department of Posts.

Allahabad has alas declined as my post to Malvai reveals. When one is foced to look outside one's place of residence for buying products, one naturally casts one's net as widely as possible. Anyway, I will keep your advice in mind. And yet, it is difficult to separate the wheat from the chaff.

Regards.

Hi Kittu,

Thanks for your suggestions. I have been offered two Arcams and a Cambridge Audio Azur (lacking phono inputs). Nothing much in the speaker line though except for huge floor standing Tannoys of nineteen fifties vintage. I am reluctant to consider something so old and so huge.

I am seriously thinking of opening a thread in the wanted section, now that I have crossed the minimum number of posts required.

Regards.

@micro

IMHO, pick up the Arcam amp. don't worry if it does not have a phono. you can easily look for a good used phono on audiogon. something like a project phono box or a clearaudio nano depending on what your budget is...

for speakers, look aroud on the forum, there were a lot of lightly used pieces or you could contact 'soundsgreat' on this forum and he'll make you a pair. I believe that he makes pretty good speakers for people on a budget. in fact his speakers would be betterthan the mass market options that you'd get under 50k.

Hmmmmmm
Time and tide dont wait for Prayag either, eh, Miro?

For starters, go for a sonodyne sia-208r new for abt 13.5k. 4 inputs plus phono stage. FF remote. Good SQ and ASS(after sales support, lol) compared to other brands, plus
ITS A SONODYNE. I wouldnt call that 'not bad'. Its 'damn good' and will save you a lot of bother besides providing all that you yearn for.

My two phooti kaudis.

If I were you I would look at the Tannoys very seriously. The 1950's Tannoys could be the Monitor Blacks or the Monitor Reds(most probably). Paired with a good tube amplifier they will blow away many modern higH end/high priced speakers.

With your M8 amps and the Tannoys you will have a system that will sound amazing.

If you are not interested in the Tannoys ,can you give me the details of the Tannoys(seller contact details).I am VERY VERY interested.

Rajiv

Hi,

Forgot about your question about YAL speakers.

I have seen several of these speakers in the back lanes around Ritchie St.(Madras).

Basically cheap chinese made drivers and locally made cabinets.

Has anyone heard of this firm, which a seller claims makes complete units for KEF? I haven't and am stumped.

The seller may be right. The parent Chinese company might be making drivers for KEF,but the ones I have seen are really low end drivers.

Regards
Rajiv

Thanks for the advice Rajiv. They are studio monitors (K3838) and may have seen hard use. Cosmetically also they are not in very good condition and may need to be refurbished. They are around 40"x27"x19" and will take up a lot of space. Do you still think they are worth trying for?

Regards.

Hi,

The K3838 are not from the 50's.They are from the 1980's.

Tannoy Monitor HPD Speakers

Not as desirable as the older models, but good drivers none the less. The 3838 has the "Tannoplas" surrounds. The surrounds have most probably rotted/failed by now and might have been replaced.(most probably with local parts)

They are worth trying out if the price is reasonable.Refurbishing them with original Tannoy parts is expensive.

What price is the seller asking for these?

If you can send me pictures of the drivers(woofers/HF diaphragam) I might be able to help.

Regards
Rajiv

@Miroflex
Good vintage, diy & custom-made speakers provide a huge SQ-cum-VFM advantage over a LOT of contemporary hi-end stuff, no doubt.

The question is, do you have the wherewithall, time and inclination to go the extra mile??? If yes, go for it, its the most REWARDING OPTION.

Trittya, you have a point but the VFM advantage of vintage equipment, including speakers, depends a lot upon the prices quoted by the seller. Many sellers highly overrate and overprice even not so good items. That has been a frequent experience during my recent hunt for good used gear. What do you say to that?
