Caps and rectifier bridge are the first line of defense after the fuses. If you're running a 110 v device on a 220 with a step down, you inherently run the risk of over voltage if your step down fails in a short mode.
In any case, I'd open and look for a fuse, and caps and rectifier bridge - and these dont fail silently ... they fail spectacularly. Big burnt and splattered parts.
I once fixed a realistic sta 2200 which had a rectifier bridge go. There was a volcano in the thing as per the guy I got it from. I fixed it in a few days ... pretty obvious what was dead and why and how far the damage carried down the line.
