Growing up listening to Lata ji I have a liking for vocal melodies. At some point in time I firmly believed Lata ji is the best singer to ever be born on Earth That was until I hadn't gotten hooked to singer such as Whiteny Houston, Celine Dion whose vocal range was nothing short of astonishing.

A couple of years ago I was introduced to Song Zuying, a Chinese folk singer. Song Zuying was an almost unheard name outside Chinese cultural sphere till a few years ago. She still is, but in recent years she has got some western exposure, including the opportunity to record a duet with guess who - Celine Dion. The two have similar vocal range but very different singing style. Song Zuying sings in a Opera style and has performed with many Orchestras of world fame. She has been kind of China's unofficial "national singer", often singing patriotic songs. In most of her songs there are traces of connect with the people and the land.

Check out Jasmine Flower by Song Zuying. Those who have a thing for folk/opera style would simply love her.
