5.1 Home Theater Setup

Three popular companies in India (in alphebetical order) for UPS solutions are:
APC, MicroTek, SuKam
They all have integrated solutions (inverter and battery bundle) or separate.

1. Confirm your house is wired for UPS; if it is there will be an in-out panel for it
2. Decide what you absolutely need to run on UPS to get an idea of how many VA the inverter should be
3. Decide on the size of the battery (Ampere Hours)
4. Then shop around

If it is confusing, there should be a local shop that you can visit and they will be able to help you match your requirements. Fans/Fridge/Mixer are a drain on battery. Avoid them if possible.

I have a MicroTek 850VA inverter + Exide 150Ah battery. Cost me 17K six years ago. In my case, the whole house except 15A points and kitchen plug points are on UPS.
When power is out, I generally switch off what is not required (to reduce load and conserve battery), eg
- Fans
- AV system(s)
- TV (if possible)
- PC (if possible)
- Laptop power cord
- Switch off CFL lamps and turn on LED lamps
- Sometimes we don't notice power outage and plug in iron or hair-dryer and the inverter unit complains loudly

You are looking at 10K+ for a minimal system. More power and larger battery will up the cost.

Raghu
