H guys,

I know that this topic is done to death, but can't help creating one, I am looking to buy a 5.1 setup to match to my onkyo 709, below are some ideas I have.

Polk tsi series: tsi 200, cs20, psw 125.
Elac: bs53, cs51 and sub50esp
KEF: C series
Tannoy: Mercury v1, VCR, Sonodyne Impac 10

More suggestions are welcome. They have to be BS, as i have no space for FS.

Budget is around 60k

Thanks.

stay away from polks............you need something more warmer. Polks go well with denon not onkyo. Onkyo being a more brighter receiver would pair well with warmer speakers. Please hear the speakers with Onkyo and then decide.

Check out the Sonodyne Sonus range (Indian Brand)

Welcome To Sonodyne

Sonodyne Sonus 2605 (FS) - 26K, Sonodyne Sonus 2504 (FS) - 17K, Sonodyne Sonus 1501 (BS) - 9K, Sonodyne Sonus C2401 (Center)- 6K, Sonodyne Sonus Rears (Dipole Surround) - 10K, Also they have 3 different subs in the range of 15 - 25K.

Mix match your combination & you have a killer package for 60K.

I am using Polk with Onkyo. For movies Onkyo is better. I suggest RTi series if you can afford.

You may audition KEF Q series, Paradim, Monitor Audio etc as well.

Thanks guys for the suggestions:

@Shaq: Mate where can i audition them in Bangalore, and what is the price point.
@Spirovious: Thanks for the suggestion VR series is definetly being considered :)
@elangoas: Thanks i will definetly check out Sonodyne
@HTuser: RTi is a little over budget, i thought of them but they go close to 85k, i want to keep it strictly around 60k, 50k was what i had in mind, but that might be falling alittle short.

Also no recommendations for ELAC, i thought they make pretty decent speakers.

Also guys it has to be BS, as no space in room to have FS.

PSB is available at Final Touch - Akash
B4 costs about 22K a pair. Not sure if he will give u a odd number. You might have to push for it

He has only B5 / B6 for audition as of now
I know at this price B4 is a good buy and they look good

22k a pair is entering RtiA3 Terittory, and i did read some reviews for B4, they seem to fall short against RTiA3, i agree it's based on listening experience too, but just talking about what i read on papers.

I auditioned MK Sound, the THX certified one's are pretty great but going uptil 1.7 lacs.

Next was Elac too Bright.

Next was Accoustic Energy Neo Series, Music sounded good, but movies lagged behind.

Next was Wharfdale 10 Diamond Series with Velodyne Sub, Centre lagged behind the rest.

Next was KEF T205, decent stuff but not there.

Next was Polk RTi Series, liked them the best till now.

Seems it might be Polk now.

Yes mate, i think that is what i will do, and i think the only confusion left is the surround now, should it be FXi A4 (BiPole/Dipole Surrounds) or RTi A1 for surrounds.

Rest of it is pretty much final

Fronts RTi A3
Centre CSi A6
DSW PRO 550 Sub

RTi will be able to produce better mid-bass compared to FXi. This will help when we watch movies with mid-bass effects from Surrounds (like Inception, U-571 etc)

I bought RTi A3 instead of FXi A6 for the same reason.

I could direct A3 towards me, hence didn't find the requirement for diffusion effect of FXi.

Another reason: RTi A1 is cheaper than FXi A4.

In my opinion RTi A3 will be best match for your A3 fronts and CSi A6 center. It will give uniform effect when sounds moves across speakers while watching movies.

I think you got a pretty solid case mate, if i am spending 24k for surrounds i better get RTi A3 then FXi, everything is 6.5" driver then. But i think i will go the A1 way and save some 6.5k :P

Also if you do not mind, can you share your experience with me about how does Polk sound in your setup, i did not get a chance to audition it with Onkyo, it was auditioned with Denon.

And that is one killer setup you got mate, i plan to get floor standers after a year or so when i would probably move into a bigger house :)

Please demo the speakers with the AVR you have. Polks will sound different with Denon and Onkyo. Generally Denon goes well with Polks but some might prefer the sound of Onkyo. This is because Polks being brighter mate well with the warmer Denon sound. This is just a guideline.............finally it has to please your ears!!!

Thanks mate

Polk+Onkyo is better combination for movies than Polk+Denon. I felt that way as I have listened to the speakers with Denon as well. My usage is 95% movies, hence the combination works well for me.

For music I use Bose Quiet Comfort Acoustic Noise Cancelling Head Phones, I felt Bose is better for music for better reproduction of upper mid-bass and above frequencies.

I like action movies and effects are to be produced well, and Polk is doing good job.

If you are planning for FS later, buy only Fronts (A3) + Center (A6). You can move A3 to surrounds when you buy FS. Otherwise you can buy A3 surrounds now and move the front A3 as surround back or front high (when you buy FS)

Sound preference is personal and varies with people. I would suggest taking your AVR and audition the speakers you have shortlisted. What if you do not like the polk+Onkyo combination ! why to take the risk? When you are going to spend 80k+ the effort of taking your AVR is worth.

Selecting A1 to save 6.5k may not be a good move. Then you will be listening to the compromised setup for next few years. It would be wise to stretch a little to go for what you like.

I like Bass a lot, hence I really stretched to get SVS PB12 Plus. Now that is my favorite item in my setup and I am happy about my decision.

Thanks for your input and i think i agree with your inputs, i will go ahead and take my AVR for auditioning purpose. I have decided to get A3 for surround also. FXi A4 is also 5 1/4 and so is A1 both will be a mismatch to 6 1/2 for RTi A3 and CSi A6. My major usage will be Movies as well.

Also A3 are one driver and Centre A6 is 2 drivers. Wouldnt this leave the front under powered.

Also one more question how much is SVS PB12, and how much gain is it over DSW Pro 550.

A beautiful, well-constructed speaker with class-leading soundstage, imaging and bass that is fast, deep, and precise.
