I have a 2.1 audio having 12w subwoofer and 14w x 2 small satellite speakers. Can I attach 8 inch speaker instead of satellites? Someone told me that it may burn the circuit of the audio. Both are 4 ohms.

what is the claimed output of the 2.1 (per channel). what is the minimum input needed for you 8 inch driver ? whats the sensitivity ?

if everything matches you might be able to do so however dont expect a huge gain as most of the 2.1 amp and crossovers are tuned for bloated lows and shrill highs you might still miss the midrange.

The 8" speakers should work. But 8" speaker alone will not output higher frequencies well. You will need 8" twin cone speaker, which has a small 2" cone attached to 8" cone at the centre. Earlier Philips used to make such speakers. I had made tuned port speaker enclosures some 40 years back and used with my DIY integrated stereo amplifier. You may try the same or other brands similar speaker in the market. I think speakers used in cars are having similar speakes with built in tweeters. This will give you fairly good specrum of frequencies.

its not worth trying

get a stereo amp and use the 8 inch speakers with that as a separate setup

you wont be able to get any bass out of the 8 inch speakers, they will perform just like satellites maybe poorer

I really do not agree with you. Today only I brought one 8inch round speaker and just connected it in place of one satellite ( the other satellite was on) and I temporarily put the 8 inch speaker on the top of an empty container( I do not have speaker box at the moment, it was just a trial). There was a marked improvement of the sound quality. Sound got louder, crisper and of course bass was beautiful. I don't expect the bass like some auto rickshaw music system or some rich father's spoilt brat's car audio where you can only hear is boom!boom!boom! That is not meant for movies. Oh! One more thing for the audiophile. I did play Eagles Hotel California, Dire Strait Sultan of Swing and Santana Black magic Woman. I loved it. In fact tomorrow only I am going to make a set of 8 inch speakers with3inch midrange and possibly a small twitter.
Incidentally, if at all I need to buy a budget amp, which one is better
Astonia sc300 or Norge 2030
Regards

buy a good 3/4" midrange speaker. the 8" will be better for bass (which it will not play because it is being sent to the sub). but have bad highs. a 3/4" would be better.

If you want better bass, you should swap it with the sub, not the sats.

Make sure the impedance is right

Once I used a 8" speaker in place of the woofer and blew the IC of the woofers amp. The 8" might sound better but i guess in the long run they will damage the internal amp of your speakers.

Going for the budget amp is the best option if you wanna make your own speakers. I can get a decent amp for around Rs. 1500 from here and courier to you if you wanna experiment with that for the time being and then go for astonia or norge

Thanks for your offer. Could you please elaborate this amp little more technically?

can you Please suggest a pair of bookshelf speakers matched with this amp? My main use will be for movies only.
Regards

Cant suggest you any speakers with this as I never paired this amp with any branded speakers. I use DIY speakers only, I dont feel others are worth it.

Can just tell you that this amp is on the brighter side so i made warm speakers having less treble in them.

You will have to try pairing it with different speakers but if you have a decent budget you can go direct for expensive hifi stuff and bypass this amp or buy speakers now and use this amp for the time being and buy a good hifi amp later, this amp is surely worth well over mere 1500 bucks.

For movies you can use passive 12 or 10 inch woofers with this amp along with 6 inch bookshelves as just using the bookshelves will not give you the desired punch you need in movies

I have tried similiar case.
Bose acoustmass 2.1 system.
Putting Bose 101 speaker inplace of small cubes.
Sound was not better since cross over cut prequency was not maching.
I suggest you to study about multi amping with crossover.
Good Luck?
