Hi All,

Some of you already know that I have acquired a PJ. I have some questions for the enlightened souls here.

1. Is a UPS must for a PJ, the dealer I bought it from here in Hyd tells me that its not required really that Hitachi PJ has a built in mechanism to cool off the lamp where power is shut suddenly. Whats the take of experts on this. Also incase a UPS is required what brands are there in the market and how are they priced.

2. I know some of you own Oppo players. I am planning to buy one too. I think Venkat will be the best person to answer this question. I am planning to invest in 981 HD but dont mind upgrading to 983H but think that 983H will be an overkill for Hitachi PJ TX-100 as its only 720p model. Venkatkr whats your take on that. Anyone can fill in with there suggestions.

3. What are good surge protector available in the market. I checked out Monster which costs 8k. Is there anything cheaper but relialable out there. In the latest addn of AV Max, I saw a brand called Belkin, whose pricing looked pretty reasonable Does anybody know if this available in India. Please help.

Hi micjak77,

Please read through this will help and guide you in the right direction -

Please go for a UPS for the projector as in case the power goes off suddenly, it causes harm to the bulb, in some cases the bulb has even blown, also it shortens the life of the bulb.

In the cheaper versions you can use APC ups that comes for PC anything above 500VA should be sufficient. This would help as if the power goes off the projector will remain on and you can shut it down and the bulb can cool down properly. It should cost u between 2.5 to 4k.

Oppo is certainly a good player and venkat is the best person to guide on the same, many forum users have the 981 and are happy with the same.
I have not heard much about the 983 yet but the 981 is a tried and tested model for which u can go for.

Both 981 and 983 upscale to 1080p. The 981 has video processing with "DCDi by Faroudja" technology and video chipset by Genesis/Faroudja. The 983 uses one of the most respected processors in the world for video processing - VRS by Anchor Bay. The 983 actually has two chips - one to handle de-interlacing, and the other for upscaling.

For a 720p system, I think the 981 will be ideal. Keep one thing in mind though. The 981 does NOT have any component output. You have to use only HDMI.

The Oppo website has the following chart for suitability of their players for various display devices.

OPPO DV-983H 1080p Up-Converting Universal DVD Player with VRS by Anchor Bay Video Processing and 7.1CH Audio

Go down to the end of the screen and look for a heading 'Oppo Recommendations' in the table.

Cheers
