I want a player for my Defy+ which will play, at least, WAV, FLAC and OGG files as well as MP3.

The most important thing is that I want to be able to open and play my music direct from the directory structure. I am against music management database and all that. It should also do gapless playback.

I also want a player that does not browse, fetch album covers, lyrics, etc etc. I just want a player :).

Of course I've been browsing Google Play, but the choice so huge, and it is very hard, in most cases, to tell from the description, whether or not it fits my requirements ...so I thought I'd ask here :)

"Music folder player". It will do everything you asked for (except playing OGG part, which I have not checked). It also sounds a tiny winy bit cleaner than the default Android player.

Downside is - It will do the database management etc in addition to doing what you want. Most users look for these features so developers would not ignore that section.

It will cataloge your music once and then it is up to you whether or not you want it to update the music library.

It doesn't have file-open kind of a thing, but will let you look at the files folder wise, and let you choose by filename. Which less or more is same as what you want.

Thanks... I was just going out when I posted, having spent half an hour or so looking at two or three different players. I did see that one, and I think the cataloging put me off, but maybe I just have to put up with that for a one time, like I do with Sqeezebox server.

I'll take another look.

I've never used my phone for music, but I have a trip coming up, and there is something wrong with my ten-year-old Cowon. I don't feel like choosing and buying a new portable player in the time available ...in fact I don't really feel like doing that at all, as I do only use one for trains, plains and trips.

Thad, try Andless. It is a really simple player. It plays music, does nothing else. I prefer minimalist players too. I use it to play FLAC. I'm not sure if it plays other formats.

Try 'Vanilla Music' by Adrian Ulrich. It's open source and supports gapless for FLAC & OGG. I love the interface, not sure how the gaplessness works but review are very positive.

This is actually really painful. I've tried more than my brain can count what's wrong with each, but some just go mad to play whatever they find, some do not do gapless playback, some make it really hard to clear the playlist and start something else --- and some don't have a QUIT. Who the ____ assumes that once you start their app you never want to stop it? Sheesh, head-knocking-together time

Thanks, I'll take a look.

The Cowon is back in service, the problem apparently caused by a worn or ill-fitting USB connector, so, despite having gone out for a 32Gb sd card, looks like I don't have to use the phone this time. I'll sort it out for the future, though, as the Cowon is certainly a brick just to carry.

<EDIT> It is very heavyweight, doesn't seem to have a Quit button () and, on my version of Android, doesn't seem to play ogg or flac. Didn't get as far as ?gapless playback?

For someone who wants a media centre type of app, it is probably going to be good.

Thanks, it looks interesting. I'll load some more music on the phone and give it a whirl. The trial licence will cover my trip :)

For excellent sound that won't break the bank, the 5 Star Award Winning Wharfedale Diamond 12.1 Bookshelf Speakers is the one to consider!
