AVR help Required

If you are happy with what you are getting, then it is fine to go ahead with what you like.

Just trying to give you a different take on things as far as an AVR goes, that is all!

Best of luck with your buy!

Hi there..

I also tried to purchase the new HArman Kardon series from Newegg. The power supply is a new concept from HK, it is using SMPS with better noise isolation. The AVR also takes lesser energy , So 5 KG is achieved.
In other AVRs, the transformer is the main weight. When the HK is driven to the max sound ranges, reviewers says that the unit is not able to drive all the channels with a low distortion signal. but not a major drawback.

Only concern is, they clearly states that this supports NTSC only in US version. I called them up and got the same reply. Whereas other AVRs like Yamaha, may silently take all the video types and pass through it.

Try HK, and if doesnt work later sell it in US at some time.

Check for Denon E400 or X2000 ,Pioneer VSX 1023 K , Harman Kardon AVR2700 ,Yamaha RX V575 ..probably if u have any friends abroad u can get it cheaper..
In my opinion ,For normal room sixe 5.1 is sufficient ,however for big room size 7.1 will be good..

The NTSC playback is certainly a drawback. I am hoping the signal passes thru. My friend has already bought this. He had to hurry as he would be travelling this week. If the NTSC signal causes an issue, I would have to connect the STB directly to my TV and then taking the audio out using an optical out cable.

Another question - SInce this uses a transformer-less power supply, would I have to use a step down transformer?

Good question.. As I understand the new HK powersupply is SMPS like a laptop power supply. It may be possible to just use the India power cord and get the AVR up and running. HK wanted a cost effective approach for the power module. You have to open up and check this out. if u have best buy etc nearby, purchase one and check the supply.

If this does not work, you need the step down transformer.

Will it 'fry' the unit if I do a trial and error method of connecting this directly to the power. Dumb question, I know but still..

Got the receiver last week. Bought the step down unit yesterday.
Facing a problem now. The unit goes off on its own after a while. If I do a processor reset or switch on, the power LED and the volume knob light just blinks and unit goes off. After a minute or so, the power unit LED starts blinking.

I turned on in the morning and the unit was fine today. Need to see how it behaves when I reach back home today.
Fingers crossed. Have raised this with HK support. Hoping the Bangalore service center accepts this.

Thanks,
Glen

It could be that the step down transformer is not giving it enough power.

Need to check these.
I also have a 1kv step down transformer which i picked up for a friend. Still doesnt help.
I kept it on today. It was on for about 30 mins and it went off. I do not have any speakers connected as of now. Could this have caused it?

Hi,

The AVR will have standby function and will go to power down mode. may be due to that.

connect any hdmi or the STB to the AVR and then to your TV.You should see the video on the TV.

then connect any reasonable speaker using cables or (even a headset to the phono jacks). try it out and see.

The above should solve your problem, however, also check the manual as to the reason of the blinking problem if you still have it.

It could be a really silly reason, usual reasons are speaker wires touching the base of the unit. But this is not you, as you have not connected to any speaker wire yet.

Thanks for your inputs guys. But seems like I have a problem here.
I tried the 1KVA transformer. it works a bit better.
I connected this to a speaker system today. It ran fine for about 10 - 15 minutes. Then goes into standby. Let it cool down for a while and then it turns on. Looks like some problem with the power supply unit.

The transformer outputs 110 V, but behind it unit it asks for 120V. Could this be the problem?

I plan to take this to the HK service center in Bangalore tomorrow. I am not sure if they would be able to help me here. Is there anyone reliable to service these for me if they are not able to help me?

Got this fixed by HK service, Bangalore. Was kinda familiar with them since we used to get out Denon DJ gear serviced there.
The service was however out of warranty.
Seems like one of the circuits with the power supply side opened up causing the unit to malfunction. He changed components from the power supply and audio amp section to rectify.
Now waiting for speakers. Have asked FM Bijin to build one for me :)

A beautiful, well-constructed speaker with class-leading soundstage, imaging and bass that is fast, deep, and precise.
