awsome diy subwoofer

i have heard this in OB (LX521, LXmini) at Linkwitz place and i agree. they are the most clean sounding subs with support for huge xmax and very low distortion. they should do pretty well in sealed box too.

I use a Keiga KG ND-52100-SP to drive it. They cost about $425 each (at least that's what I paid). I know it is too much amp for the sub but I wanted only 1 type of plate amp across my systems (which include bigger subs such as the TC 15" LMR) for the sake of inventory management.

P.S. I am not very good at this internet thing. I guess you cant teach an old dog new tricks. So please excuse my erratic presence.

What's the alternative?

I bought sand from the shop selling construction materials...bricks, blue metal ( chipped granite) etc.. They will give you a bucket full. You might have to spread a thin layer on newspaper and dry it in the sun. It must be fully dry. It could take time drying all of it !
Building an inner box and then building another around it could be tough. My boxes had only sand filled panels on the front. The other sides were stiffened using cross members. Ideally, all sides could be sand filled but the box would be too heavy to move around ! The weight of the sand is deceptive as you pour it in. It gets really heavy very fast. You don't really need river sand ! You could wash sea sand a few times and then use it.

The next alternative isn't for us. It's lead shot !

I'd suggest you just stick to making the front panel sand filled and stiffen the other sides with cross bars or ply sections with holes in them.

Guys,

Sorry I am totally new to this Sand filled thingy, but cant you use M-sand instead of the normal sand. M-sand should be easily available rt?

Cheers,
Venki

Sand filled panels is ancient technology

Due to cracking of whip by the district administration on sand mafia, getting river sand has become more difficult in Trivandrum. Anyways I'll be sourcing it through my Carpenter.

My query was, since you seem to have suggested that sand filling is passe, I was keen to know what's the alternative you have read about/ have in mind.

When I was interacting with FM Trittya a couple of years ago, he was talking about roasting the sand in a big vessel thoroughly. I fully agree with him; that process would thoroughly sanitise and rid the sand of the omnipresent fungal spores, insect eggs etc.

The front baffle is double baffle. Rear baffle is single and holds the plate amp. Two layers of plywood with sand in between on all four sides. Check out the box diagram.

I think you are referring to powdered granite which is being used extensively in place of river sand. I did consider that but found that the granules are too fine to be used for the application.
Follow Danny's build. Don't compromise.
Yeah, I intend to but no harm in learning about latest info that our FMs may have right! ;-)

Sand filling fulfills two objectives AFAIK.

1. Damping the cabinet walls so that they do not rattle.

2. Mass loading the cabinet so that the box itself doesn't move around playing heavy LF content.

IMO lead shots would not help in objective 1. May be they could be used along with sand for adding more mass. I'll take a call after taking note of the results.

I think the best way to procure the moisture/insect free sand is to get from the ground nut frying guys on the trolley who sell the salted fried ground nuts or even the popcorn makers trolley here in Bangalore :)

Hi Captain, eagerly waiting for your updates on DIY sub, me too planning to make one.
