Ayon CD1s with BE 718

ROC - try running the player directly to your amp. I did this and felt that SQ wise the Cd1s performance was almost at par with my Parasound JC2 pre (which retails for $4k), and I could use either and be happy, but it was outclassed by the ARC ls26.
Cheers,
Sid

I shall try that tonight after I get back home. I'll post my impressions once I get a thorough listen with the cd player connected direct.

Congrats on a great CDP!

The preamp controls must surely have volume controls. When in doubt read manual:lol:

So it turns out that there's something missing without the preamp in the chain. Can't put a finger on what it is but some of the air around voices got lost. Also the dynamic impact was a bit muddied.

Looks like I need to fix the preamp's gain. That seems like the only solution.

Congrats ROC on the Ayon
On a recent visit to Bangalore I had a chance to look up the player hooked up to the Symphonic line and I found it to be impressive.Of course effect of the Lyrita pre is a point to be considered. I was hoping otherwise (against hope).
Enjoy

Fixed the gain issue finally. Now I'm in digital heaven :-).

Himadri actually the lyrita pre is not that bad in terms of sound. The basic circuit doesn't have any compromises and my preamp has completely different parts from stock now.

I've modified the grounding to a proper star ground and hum is inaudible unless you put your ear close to the tweeter.

Also there are NOS Sylvania 6SN7GT tubes in place which I managed to snag from be3amplifiers for reasonably cheap.

To upgrade from this pre, I'd definitely need to spend something close to what I spent for the CD Player.

Ofcourse I need to point out, straight out of the box, I was not super happy with the sound.

Bigger issue cropped up which has nothing to do with the system but with how much low bass is being produced!

The folks downstairs came running to complain that they are unable to sleep.

This unfortunate incident never happened before and I'm running similar volumes as earlier. I guess its just the extra low bass that is causing issues.

Could anyone please suggest a solution to this. I'm thinking of putting thick wall to wall carpets.

I normally listen to music only after 10pm as I do not get time earlier during the day. Plus due to cleaner power at night, it sounds a lot better too.

RoC,
Congratulations on the Ayon. It IS a very good CDP, heard the earlier version (CD1) at Pratim's place and I have a fair idea what it can do.

Regarding the bass problem, may I suggest changing your CDP to amp IC from whatever you have to a pure silver solid core cable. I am assuming you are not already using this kind of cable. Just borrow such a cable and try out. It may just work out. In my experience, this has worked once.

Regards

Thank you for the suggestion.

Actually the bass is not a problem for me at all. Its really tight, deep and defined. I'm loving it completely.

Its only a problem for the folks living downstairs . My audiozone dac never produced this kind of low end and as a result I never had any complaints from neighbours.

I've been through half a dozen different interconnects ranging from Usher, Transparent, Audio Art, Audioquest, Solitone X, ASI Liveline before settling on the Einstein neutron. Some of the previous ones were silver while others were copper. The einstein I use is a hand built pure copper IC. It has the most organic tone of all the cables I've tried so far. In fact I was so impressed by their interconnect, I ended up buying their once top of the line greenline largo unisono solid core speaker cables too. Both of these cost me quite a bit too. So switching cables - at least now is totally out of the question since I don't want tonality to be affected.

I think I'll start off with thick carpets, curtains and some rubber beading/sheets on the floor/doors so that sound doesn't leak outside. If that doesn't work I'll start having to look for another independent house.

Regards.

This would be low frequency vibrations transmitted through the walls and floor. Not sure if the above treatments would help.

I would knock on their door with gift-wrapped ear buds as a surprise - one for each member of the family (and the dog). :ohyeah:
