Get a decent 200-300$ CD player and a good outboard DAC with the rest. If you look at used options for the DAC, your options increase significantly.

At 1000$ I would suggest the best cd player you can find instead of a dac/transport. Try a Cambridge audio 840c, Rega Apollo etc....

If you have a good pc based source, go with a 1000$ DAC

Thanks for chiming in. Though my long-time budget is around $1000 for my primary playback solution, for different reasons, I do need a DAC and a stand-alone CDP would not work for me. However, if I am convinced enough that there would be a dramatic improvement in the SQ by going for a dedicated transport with the DAC I decide on, then I might consider one or try building a Shigaclone.
