What is the best way to decode FLAC for lossless audio in AVR.

I have lossless flac stored on a network media storage and can stream it to AVR using a media player.

I would ideally prefer AVR DAC to decode rather than it being transcoded via a lossy method

All of the current gen AVRs can decode FLAC when played via USB or Network. YOu just need to make sure you need to select "DIRECT" mode (can be different for different AVRs) while playing music.

Thanks. The GUI of AV receivers in not good and it does not bring the album art.

i would rather use a media player (popcorn hour or Nvidia shield).

If we stream the decoded audio (PCM) from a media player to AV, I believe the DAC(digital to analog) conversion will happen in receiver. Is my understanding correct.

Hi,

Technically, AVR should receive digital audio in order to process (or convert it into Analog) through its built-in DAC.
So, any digital interface like Optical, USB, HDMI, etc. should transfer digital audio to AVR and AVR should convert it into Analog using its DAC.
I think it may be worth trying to use optical out from PC (if available) to AVR to find differences between audio coming over optical and HDMI.
