I would like to get a Blu ray player with decoded 5.1 output over Optical or Coaxial in order to connect this up to my Denon 1509.

Firstly will this work?

If it will what Blu ray players deliver this output, I've been going through various sites looking for details about outputs and I've not found anything. What players would you recommend?

Thank you,

Such a system doesn't exist - coaxial/optical doesn't have enough bandwidth for 5.1 lossless pcm. Only way out is to look for a bluray player which has 5.1 analog outs.

Optical and coaxial outputs support 5.1 DTS and Dolby Digital. So if your AVR has support for DTS and Dolby Digital through optical/coaxial input then get any BDP. All BDPs support 5.1 DTS/Dolby Digital through optical/coaxial.

DD and DTS will do easily no problem...i think all bdp will do.
dd tru hd and dts hd ma will be downmixed to DD or dts...no problem at all....
try sony 190 6k....

btw 1509 do have hdmi inputs....why are you trying other routes than hdmi when it do have it??if they are already engaged...can use hdmi selector switch..

Thank you for the replies.

The HDMI on 1509 is through put switching only, the unit can not play audio over HDMI, if only someone had told me when i purchased it!

The unit also does not have the ability to decode dolby, it must be supplied as analog.

Is the consensus that Optical or Coaxial can only transmit encoded dolby 5.1, so the denon would need to be able to decode this? Or that Optical has got the bandwidth to handle decoded dolby 5.1?

If it hasn't what Blu ray players if any have 5.1 analog outputs?
