Hi guys,

There's a hifi/AV show in Bristol(UK) this weekend. If you have family/friends in the UK interested in hifi/AV stuff you could let them know. I used to attend these shows quite regularly but am reducing this nowadays as upgraditis kicks in straightaway.

Sound & Vision - The Bristol Show - Home

I guess a similar show in India would be good.

I'm planning to go on Saturday.

I would be interested in taking a look at Audiolab's new digital products and XTZ amps which have the ability to work in user selectable Class A and Class AB modes :licklips:

Wow, sound really great. If someone happens to attend this show, please put some pics/snaps and impression about the gears. Thanks in advance.

Subhobh,
This is a video from last year(Feb 2010)

YouTube - What Hi-fi? Sound and Vision at the Bristol Sound and Vision show 2010

when I went for the Manchester show there was quite a lot of 3D tvs and projectors - think there will be more of this in Bristol this weekend.

what hifi may upload a show report on youtube later I think.

Been to the Bristol Hi-fi Show 2011 yesterday. Its such a nice show where flagship models of most brands were displayed for demonstration. There were CD players costing some 6k GBP for the Rega ISIS to Naim CD555 with 555PS power supply costing 17k and stereo rigs costing 20K

Good to see the man behind Marantz and on whose name KI perl series is named after Ken Ishiwata at their stall.
Also the designer of Audiolab 8200 series digital products John Westlake at the Audiolab stall.
Of course they were the heroes for our Hi-fi hobbyists :ohyeah:

I managed to take very few pics and here is the link for them Bristol Hi-fi Show 2011

A short review of my impressions of the equipment displayed over there

The best of all the hi-end rigs were the Naim with their Naim Ovator-600 speakers whith their other flagship equipment. They were placed in dim light to give a feel of their massive 3D sound stage even to the noobs.

The other speakers which caught my attention were the Neat Acoustics Ultimatum XLS Bookshelf speakers and the PMC's driven Fact series speakers driven by Brystons.

In the low-end I liked the Acoustic Energy Compact-1 speakers (4" woofer, 1" silk dome tweeter, 88dB sensitivity, 100W power handling). It is hooked to Naim UNITIQUTE audio player. Irrespective of its size it sounded big like a floor stander. I had even asked them whether they have a sub connected to it. I was told its cabinet is strong heavily braced with a good woofer and hence its putting out the bass like a big speaker and its priced at 150 (about 10k INR) and this model is hitting the stores in 4-5 weeks in UK/EQ. Later Compact-3 floor stander, Compact-Centre and Compact-sub.

Here is the pic of the speakers. This speaker should be seriously considered with most entry level amps till about 20k -25k INR. I haven't heard CA S30 but this AE-Compact 1 may be better than that.

Among the DAC's/CD Players displayed there the Audiolab 8200DQ Preamp with DAC looked more future proof with its analog and digital connectivity . Or the Audiolab 8200CDQ CD Player with Pre Amp connected directly to power amp is the best for those having more digital sources providing the shortest signal path between the source and speakers.

The Furutechs Alpha Design Labs GT40 DAC With Phonstage loked great. It sounded like A headphone amp/ a phono pre amp/ an USB DAC/ ADC all in one package. The features say rip your vinyl to Hard Drive. I was thinking it acts as a ADC too.

Also for speakers looks like the days of describing their sound signature as bright sounding or warm sounding are gone. The PMC fact series have adjustable woofer and tweeters. There are two 3 way switches for bass and treble behind near the binding posts. One position keeps the frequencies flat the other increases the frequencies by say 2dB and the other position decreases by few dB to make it more suitable to adopt it to the listening environment.
The XTZ speakers have an adjustable tweeter in a similar way.

One thing I observed with the pairing of amps to speakers the manufacturers choose to display their equipment. I don't remember all combinations.

Stereo rigs:
Marantz amps --> Mordaunt Short Speakers
Onkyo Stereo amps --> Mordaunt Short/ B&W
Rotel Amps --> B&W Speakers
Bryston --> PMC Fact series speakers
Audiolab --> Wharfedale
REGA --> Looked like PMC Fact (It was placed in dim light )
AE --> Naim

KEF speakers --> Marantz Amps/CD Player
NEAT Acoustics --> NAIM Amp/CD Player
Castle Acoustic--> QUAD Amps
Dynaudio --> Chordette

Surprisingly the NAD AV gear is displayed with Q Acoustics speakers. They have displayed PSB speakers too but the demo was with Q Acoustics. May be as the reason PSB not so famous here in UK but the prices are cheaper than in US.

On a similar note, I was at the Broadcast Engineering Society's annual Expo at Pragati Maidan in New Delhi today. Saw and heard Adam A7X studio monitor. This is the one with Adam's proprietary ribbon tweeters. It had very clean highs and mids despite the noisy expo environment. Quite impressive. They claim that the folded ribbon configuration pushes 4 times more air than conventional dome tweeters.

Another stall (Riviera's) had Focal CMS50 and CMS60. Personally I liked the Focals more than the Adams or similar sized Genelecs. In fact I also liked the Focals more than Dynaudio BM5s. There were lots of KRKs as well, but sonically I didn't find them too impressive. Might as well buy Yamaha MSP-5 for less than KRK money for similar performance. Sonodyne was also there in full strength displaying their pro stuff.

Hmmm,I don't fancy going down the Naim route - I havent been massively impressed by Naim.Not planning to change my LFD amplifiers yet,unless a Sugden masterclass was available cheapish :)

A beautiful, well-constructed speaker with class-leading soundstage, imaging and bass that is fast, deep, and precise.
