Can MacBook Pro stream surround sound?

Friends, Macbook Pro can not output surround sound on built in HDMI port but with the help of thunderbolt port HDMI adapter it can output 5.1 surround sound. I have 10m long HDMI cable so no problem but I don't understand why Macbook can not stream movies in surround sound to VLC of the firestick? I have enable Digital audio output pass through option of VLC still no surround sound.

Any help appreciated.
