Hi gurus,

Can marantz 5006 drive the 4ohms epos epic 5speakers? Some people said it cant run, some people said it can run.i am in full confusion.
If any one using this type of combination like 8ohms avr with 4ohms spekers, give me your comments .

Thanks in advance.

5006 is not 8 Ohm. Its 6-8 Ohms.

Marantz can drive 4 Ohm speaker but I would suggest at very moderate volumes only.

Higher volumes will put too much of load on AVR.

Driving my thiel(4ohms) with Marantz 7002 for HT purpose and no problem with high volume too. Never clipped so far.

Regards

Hi Suresh,

I have two AVRs. And I have used them to drive half a dozen pair of speakers. Many of them 4 Ohm nominal loads. They never clipped or shutdown. One of them is an entry level Harman Kardon and the other a Denon flagship. What matters is: how strong a power section the amp has, and how stable is its design across loads.

Which amp can drive which speaker with what ease is best judged by playing them together. Use theory to give yourself a starting point but never accept/reject a gear based purely on theory. In any case, here is the theory. Theoretically speaking; the Marantz you are talking about *should not* be able to drive the Epos. Look at the impedance curve of the speaker.

But practically? It might just do so. Some tips if you want to use this combination:

  1. Since you know your speakers are difficult to drive at certain frequencies, don't run them extremely loud (like party mode).
  2. Give your amp breathing space. Keep it ventilated. In Indian conditions amps also shutdown due to excessive heat.
  3. Since the speakers constantly remain clearly over 3.5 Ohms all the times, and over 4.5 Ohms over a large range, if the amp can withstand 4 Ohms nominal it will work well.
  4. Since the speakers are quite sensitive (92 dB), your amp will barely need to pump 1-4 watts of power to make it go fairly loud. So it should not ask too much of your amp.
  5. If the amp can't deal with the dips and spikes you will hear it.
  6. Play them together, if the sound doesn't sound unnatural, you can buy it. Just be sure to not overdrive it.
