Hi,
I have the Sony double-din HeadUnit.
The player detects only 16GB USB memory stick.
Currently I am using 3x16GB stick, which i keep changing for a required song.

I need a suggestion/solution to have one source to load more and more songs.

Is there a HU which acts as a HDD media player?

I think its because the unit only reads FAT32. Your pendrive is FAT32 format.

I think a portable hard drive formatted to FAT32 will work on your HU.

Hi Raghumailbox,

Just curious. Don't you have an aux in where you can then add a big memory portable player iPod types? Wouldn't that be the regular way?

Or you want to stick to using pen drives only? Not sure if I've misunderstood your roadblock...

Regards

Most of these HU's have a limitation on USB from 2 aspects - They support USB 1.1 and most support only Fat32 file system.

Due to this, the flash memory they can access in one go will be limited.
You may want to check on HUs that have a better USB support or go for a HDD based system...or go for a carputer...

Or...You can go for something that supports direct iPod access which would mean you can control iPod from the HU. This typically provides better sound quality over the aux port that connects the headfone out of the iPod to the HU.

The other option is to go for a HU that has a better USB adapter. I currently use Pioneer P80RS with UD-100 (IIRC). This is old technology which has an outboard USB unit. With this I can connect upto 100 GB (so they say...I'm using a lowly 8GB card that is enough for me)

Okay...late night in office...I guess i'm just rambling now...so i'll shut up...

Hi Stevie,

I don't want to have any thing external. Initially i was searching for the system which will have the USB line hidden behind and brought this.

From my personal experience, Ipods will make you irritate on the long run.
Connecting-Charging-Browsing-Storing the equipment, etc. Still kids beside you will make you very much unsecure.

I am looking at a simple system, where i can sit inside the car and quickly browse using the HU.

Hi,
Thanks for replying late night.
Again Ipod is limited.
I listen to English,Hindi and all SouthIndian music/songs, memory will be a big issue.

If am unable to solve this problem, I will be looking for a new HU.
The features in new HU i prefer is
1. Touch & Manual
2. Play movies on DVD and various format files
3. Rear Camera Input
4. 4.1 channel output
5. Since this will have movies also, it should support heavy storage.

Please advice.

If you can wait for a couple of months (2-3 max) you can get an android (JellyBean) based HU that supports all your needs. I have developed one android based double DIN HeadUnit (you can connect several TBs of HDD:)) based on the available h/w options in the market. The highlights of this unit are:

- 6.2" / 6.5" / 7" High Quality IPS LCD panel with 1080p full HD resolution support (native panel resolution 1280x800 (16:10) / 800x480 (16:9))
- Audiophile grade internal DAC / external USB DACs.
- Hard Disk support: 1GB - 5TB and *any USB storage device
- Audio format supported : FLAC, FLAC(HD), WAV, MP3, APE, AAC, OGG, AC3
- Video Format supported : WMV, ASF, MP4, 3GP, AVI, 3G2M4V, MJPEG, RV10, VC-1, DivX, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, H.263, H.264,1280x720P HD 30fps,1080P/720X480 D1 30fps
- Audiophile grade PreAmp section with 2v o/p (need to finalize)
- ECU OBD reader with Torque as default reader app
- High quality GPS receiver that can be used with Google Maps / Sygic / similar app
- Reverse / Front parking camera support
- HeadUnit navigation using external remote
- All upgrades will be Modular so that the previous owners can upgrade their existing HU by paying the extra charge.

Note : If anyone is interested in this unit can post the interest in the above thread., sorry for going OT. I will be posting a separate thread on this later.

I use iPod on my Civic. I would like to understand what limitations are faced. I have created play-lists in iPod based on singer/group, genre, albums, etc. I get to see the list on the dashboard. I can select the playlist of my choice and play the music. I can randomize the order too. The ipod lies hidden away in the CD compartment below the arm rest. The ipod is charged continuously when it is connected and car is running. So I am not sure what flexibility is missing.

Of course, the interface is well built and it makes it easy to navigate from the dashboard itself without ever touching the ipod.
