Caveat emptor

That's why no one should rely on any "music cloud". The best solution is relying on oneself.

All my data, 8 TB worth of media and other content is available on internet 24x7, and I don't need to pay anyone a single penny except the internet fee (which I would pay anyway) and my investment in a NAS hardware (which, again, I would invest anyway, due to local storage and fast access needs).

The music cloud or other such clouds will remain popular among the average Joe though, people who are not tech savvy or would just prefer to simplify their lives by outsourcing their needs.

As long as its bought on iTunes you can always access it and move it to a new PC provided you have the login/password details.

Personal backup though is the right way to go about it. I have 2 external backups apart from what I listen to daily on the PC and of course the original physical backup of the physical CDs (though I cannot imagine having to rip and tag them all again).

8 TB??? I'm impressed! All of my CDs ripped have not crossed 500 GB. I don't collect movies anymore though. Have 200+ DVDs in 5.1 (DTS and Dolby) now made redundant with the advent of HD content and TVs. I just did not have the patience to start my movie/Blu-ray collection all over again.

8 TB is the capacity of my NAS, and it's not full yet. Of used space, Music part is just a fraction. Most of it is taken by BD/DVD Rips. Media files are getting bigger day-by-day. I am sure I will run out of this space some day not far distant.
