Chromecast 2 query

I am considering getting a Chromecast 2 for wirelessly streaming Full HD movies stored locally on my laptop hard drive to my TV/ projector. At the moment I am using a 25 foot long HDMI cable (from Bluerigger) and while I have no complaints with the present method, I would like to go wireless and avoid the hassle of dealing with cables.
Now I have read conflicting information on a particular point and hope forum members can help me out. The question is this: Is it necessary to have an active internet connection in order to stream movies on the Chromecast 2? Isn't connecting to a wi-fi network enough?

No Internet connection is not needed. Just a WiFi connection with chrome cast and source device on the same network. I am using one and it's excellent.

Thanks for the quick reply . Is there any discernible loss in image quality? Also, are there any audio sync issues?

If I connect chromecast 2 to connect my non-smart tv via hdmi then will I be able to access media files from my himedia player which is hooked to another Smart tv on same wifi network ? Coz this was not achievable in first version of chromecast

I am using Chromecast 2 on my non-smart HD TV. The contents are residing on my MyCloud drive on the same network. Yes you have use an app which is capable of reading either shared folders or if your himedia does DLNA then the app will simply connect to this DLNA and play whatever you want. I have played full HD videos over wifi and have had no loss whatsoever. Just make sure your wifi signals are strong enough. Hope this helps.

All connect or kodi client get listed in Google Home app. They pull all the contents from my hard disk connected to the Raspberry pi whicj is on the same WiFi

And if the contents of your himedia are accessible on LAN of home network then simply ES explorer chromecast plugin will work.

YOU are badly mistaken, Chromecast typically does require Internet connection, however there are ways to circumvent that requirement, but ideally Chromecast does require Internet Connection to work. I have 3 CC with me CC 1 CC 2 and CC in built in Shield TV. Check out few threads vouching the same.

Thats a bit off/long way to do it, easier, much easier method is to use Videostream for Google Chromecast Chome browser plugin. It loads on your chrome browser tab, click on choose video button and choose any video from your local PC/Laptop or Networked Drive(NAS) and cast it to chromecast. I have been using it for months now and it is perfect, infact I was so impressed I purchased the full version for the same. You can cast photos and add a background music as well while the slide show is running. Pretty good plugin if you ask me.

Ah that's new. Let me give it a try. I too thought that for local content, a connection to the Internet would not be needed. Thank you for the links.

That is news to me. Mine (3 audios and 2 videos) don't run without internet. I'd certainly be interested in a workaround for local media via Plex.

One of the easier ways is Plex (have to pay for Plex app, but server s/w is free). Its especially easy for the non-tech geeks and parents... just load the Plex app on the their phone, tablet, etc. and they can cast local content and stream the likes of Netflix.

The good thing is it takes from a ton of sources - NAS, PCs (running anything from OMV to FreeNAS), online services, etc.

I cast 1080 videos to TV via Chromecast.
Yes you always need active internet connection for any type of casting. If there is no internet, chromecast won't work. I have done this testing many months back.

I use Localcast app. You can use ES file explorer too. Both are free and hassle free.

Let me know, if you have more queries.

The greatest drawback for PLEX (which ironically also is its greatest strength,.. if you ask me) is that is requires a dedicated plex server to be running, not everyone can spare hardware to set up a dedicated server. But if one can I agree nothing beats PLEX when it comes to playing media content, local and specially from remote, if your upload speeds are up to it.

Much easier solution to cast local content from ur PC/Laptop as I suggested is to use videostream for google chromecast. Works perfect, no need to install or run anything, just install the google plugin and you are good to go ...(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZZz1o-wKGH8)

3) As said i buy chromecast 2, connect to non-smart on same wifi network
4) I should be able to access my media files on himedia which supports dlna

Any idea if someone is selling CC2 or better online/offline place to buy with any deal.

I have connected my 1 Tb hard drive to TP Link router.
And then i can play any content from that hard drive to my sony TV via chromecast 2.

Nah, newbie error. Still learning to use the CC. Imagined that local media is working independent of Internet connection, but looks like its not. Have not tried it yet, but the links by Sam seem to prove that.

It appears, from what I have read in the useful link provided by sam9s, that the Chromecast is capable of streaming locally stored content without the need for an active internet connection. But for some reason, Google has decided to make having an active internet connection mandatory for the Chromecast to work.
However, some user reviews of the Chromecast 2 on flipkart have suggested that no active internet connection is required for streaming local content. Could it be that Google brought about some changes in the new device? BUT, there are also an equal number of reviews that complain about an active internet connection being needed to run the device.
Hmmm, still confused!
