Dear FMs i m really confused on buying good AVR upto Rs. 50,000/-. As i live in dehradun so it is a little bit difficult to demo the avr or speakers. my usages are 70% movies/DTH and 30% music. based on reviews and according to my budget for speaker I m going to finalize Wharfdale MS 100 HCP. but i m very confused on buying suitable AVR. so plz help on deciding my first home theater setup.

AVRs could be Yamaha, Onkyo, Marantz, Pioneer etc. Since you mentioned Dehradun, the best one would be the one who has a service centre closest to you for the unlikely eventuality. I am using a Yamaha 475 and like it for movies and music.

Hope the service center for Yamaha is at VENUS MUSIC,NEW CONNAUGHT PLACE, DEHRADUN- 248001,Contact No.+91- 135- 2712300 / +91- 9837121890(It is found on Yamaha website). You can check it there..so that u can prefer yamaha..

There are three good options at this price point, The yamaha RX675, denon X2000 and the sony 1040 however the sony is not available in india.

A few weeks ago I purchased the Yamaha RX675 out of these, works good using drama DSP mode for movies and direct for music.

Dear audiodoc which one of these two avr is more suitable for me & pairing with wharfdale 5.1 HCP. Where can I audition them nearby.

dear FMs thanks for ur valuable advice. where can i demo yamaha avr with wharfdale MS 100 HCP and what about yamaha new AVR RX V 477. any other option in this price range. Dehardun dealer doesnt deal in AVRs. he deals in musical instruments only.

not sure where you can demo both under one roof:sad

just a thought, how about buying a HTIB like yamaha YHT 299 (around 35k)

the speaker package you mentioned don't need a 50k receiver
though if needed V375 or V475 should do the job

the new X77 series don't have anything serious to consider

one of the features : Front Cinema = placing all 5 speakers in front and still achieving surround.... who wants that? better buy a sound bar

I have been using various models of denon with wharf setup(details in signature) and they sound good. Amazon US is selling X series Denons at a v compelling price and they are also shipping it to India. You might want to check it out. E.g. X1000 which sells for around 39K in India is selling at $239 (~16K INR). Even with shipping charges it would surely be lot less that Indian price. I am not sure if it comes with Intl warranty though.

Thanks to all FM for there valuable sugestions. I may come to Delhi for auditioning and purchase the system on same day. Please advice me for yamha and wharf dealer in Delhi/NCR.

you can check for dealers on yamaha india websites but do your homework...shortlist a few models of receivers and check for pricing and if demos are available with them. Some dealers quote a very high price so survey is important for pricing.

dear FMs after ur valuable suggestions, my usages and budget I have finalized the following option.

AVR :- Yamaha RX V 375 or RX V 475.

Speaker Package :- BA XS 5.1 or Wharfdale MS 100 HCP or MS 65+

I m not considering YHT 299 or any other HTiB.

Please let me know the right match from above options and where can i get good deal on them in delhi or chandigarh.

Hello Gopal,

With your 50K budget I would suggest seeing if you can get your hands on the Cambridge Audio 551r AVR. This will be a significant step up in sound quality from the common mass market brands. Marantz or NAD would be the next in line.

Also, I always see folks making this split between movies and music but I think this is an irrelevant separation. An AVR that excels at music reproduction will excel at movies. A movie is mostly dialog (voice) and soundtrack (music).

A good AVR which does music well overall will also do bass well so you don't need to worry about explosions, etc sounding good.

AVRs which are typically noted as being good for movies usually do one note, one dimensional over bloated thuds for bass which often impress people who are one dimensional (:ohyeah:).

Good luck on your hunt and glad to offer any additional help

Thanks rsud for your nice suggestion. but 551 R is out of budget for me and I dont need 7.1. how about 351R from Cambridge audio. I coudnt find any review for this AVR. hifimart is retailing 551R for Rs. 73800/- and 351 R for Rs. 49000/-.

I think you mentioned 50K for AVR, what is your combined budget for AVR & Speakers ?

hi gopal

i m also from dehradun  if budget is tight try to find out any demo unit or previous models of the receivers from the distributors..sometimes distributors have them and they give it cheap..also you will get warranty..the only disadvantage you will loose out on some latest features..but that depends on individual

btw i like marantz so my inclination is towards that..but i heard really good praises about CA..never heard it tough

My Budget for AVR is Rs. 50000/- and Rs. 30000/- for Speakers. As per suggestion of rsud I may go for CA azur 351r or marantz 1504. or entry level AVR frm yamaha and save more for speakers. I m getting more & more confused

i really think you should do opposite with the avr speakers budget and geet floor standers for front
mezzo 6
zensor 5
tsx550
mercury vi4

these can be considerations and many more within the budget
