Connecting Subwoofer to System

I have an oldish Philips 3 changer stereo system. It is one of those with pseudo surround, in that there are two satellite speakers making a total of 4 speakers. Bass is understandably a little weak. At the back of the system there is an input marked "woofer input". My question is:
Will it be possible to connect the sub-woofer of a 5.1 computer speaker system to the Philips??

In doubt it since it says 'input' and not output. If you have the manual, read it and see what it says.

Well then, you can certainly connect a Sub to it.

What sub?active or passive ?
Cos those old models will have only passive sub.
