Upgrading from a Schiit Bifrost to a Renaissance Labs Concero HD. The fact that this dac has no power supply kind of appeals to me as i plan to use it with a coaxial input from the Ibasso DX90 and supply dac power from a usb battery brick. Hoping to gain some sq via this method. Budget is kind of limited to this dacs price range.

What do you guys suggest ? Hope to put up my Bifrost on sale in a month if i go ahead with this.

cheers

bifrost vs concero is almost the same price range.

i dont know if you will get a quantum jump over the schiit bifrost..

price range is important - to avoid compromises.

The ESS Sabre etc... etc.. is a lot of sabre rattling  ( kidding.. )

OTOH... you may like to try the Uber analog upgrade offered by Schiit as a way to evolve your dac or maybe even move onto a higher offering from schiit itself.

the key ( IMO ) is to decide why you need the change ?

is it to taste a different flavor.... then possibly yes...

if it is to further progress on the sound ( which you may already like from the Bifrost ).... then i dont know..

maybe other FM's will chip in too...

regards

I agree with Mahesh...It is better to try the Uber upgrade rather than shift to another similar priced DAC...

If you do get one, give me a shout and we can compare the Bifrost, Concero, Meridian Director (with me) and other similar priced DACs together...

But I would make sense to upgrade to a Gungnir or a higher product from Resonnance Labs as the Concero would be a lateral move with you losing money..

Continuing from above...
Moreover, Schiit price their products quite reasonably. So a similarly priced product may not be at par with them. Look at the Gungnir, and see how many such DAC with dual digital section and discrete analog sections for odd $800!
Go for Gungnir or wait awhile for their flagship in 2015 which is supposed to be priced in the range of $1200-1500 range.

Although ive loved the Schiit sound over the period ive used it but i think my system can do with a change of flavour. I bought a Ibasso DX90 to use as a source via coaxial, the sound has improved leaps and bounds over my mede8er media player. Just more snr, had to turn down my amp gain and everything sounds good. Now i feel i need a little more upfront sounding dac, the Bifrost is warm, musical and has good transparency, but i feel a need a change.

+1 for that. I recently got my Bifrost Uber w/USB and have been listening to it since than, I think a week back. It continues to improves, keeping it consistent with what I read on most forums about a break-in of around 100 hours. Very nice soundin dac!

I do own a Schiit Bifrost with Uber upgrade....you can easily see a 30% increase w.r.t the Bifrost without the upgrade. Also many say that with this upgrade, it matches the Gunir model in terms of sound minus remote and Balanced output. You take a pick...

Cheers,
vince

+1, Uber upgrade here too.

That very nice sounding DAC. I am using it both latest USB upgrade and Uber analog stage. Gungnir is having Balanced output of required. Sound-wise same as bifrost uber.

Everybody suggesting uber upgrade, the bifrost does sound great no doubt i can totally connect. In John Darko's dac index uber upgrade and concero hd both come in same the same Division 4.

Did any of you get the uber upgrade card and install it themselves or with an electrician ?

^^ I am sorry about too many mistakes, it's poor English. Thanks to auto correction of touch screen.

This can be done by own self, if proper care is taken while installing (read as proper grounding of self while installing). I bought mine pre-installed. If you have access to any electronic technicians, it can be installed with their help.
