DAC - To buy or to not buy(Confused)

Abhi:A good DAC will improve your music period. How much will it improve depends on the DAC and the capability of your system.

Now if you more technical questions post them, else lets not continue will it or wont it anymore!!!

abhi,

There is a citypulse dac up for sale with price drop in owners section. Check it out mate.

Now I will buy DAC after listening to it. I don't wanna get bashed by my DAD:rolleyes::o

Hey

We would all like to hear your dad bash you ... Maybe we can all crowd around the window outside while he goes about it? Will his thundering voice beat the DAC in the lows? Will your screams beat the frequency extension of your newly purchased DAC in the highs? And the mids ... oh the mids ... will they be the mids you die for ...!! :ohyeah:

Then we can post an audiophile review of the bashing ... er the DAC purchasing experience on this forum for all to enjoy :D

Cheers

Priceless dude..

Thanks for the link but now will buy only after taking demo of any DAC. I don't wanna take risk

I think you should also ask for a demo of bashings from Dad ... :ohyeah: that way you will feel prepared if your DAC purchase does not satisfy your tastes. :D

Are you taking your dad for the demo, will he be doing the A-B? or would both of you be taking an audiogram test beforehand to decide who does the A-B?.

On a more serious note, from my experience (got an audiosector nos dac recently, will post my impressions separately when i get time to seriously A-B), you wont be getting any huge improvement over even a budget CDP(in a budget setup, i guess). If it is for listening through PC/media player, go ahead and buy the dac. It should make a difference.

^Thats what I feel too.
It will be an improvement over the out put from your WDTV. But will it be better than a CDP? I dont think so, not at this price point anyway.
But it may give you a timber, sound signature that you *may* prefer. Either get something cheap like the udac,Gigaworks dac or go for something much more better like the Caimans, Dacmagic,Rdac.
Forget the Maverick D1 unless you are looking for a head amp.
You could also try this:
Audio-GD Company

This is a very useful topic - thanks. I have always wondered if the premiums charged for many of these hi-end products are justified.

Nice thread.
I was looking for a solution to improve the sound from my laptop when connected to the amp. I was thinking of a good sound card but after going through this thread I too want a DAC now :D:yahoo:

Do anyone have an idea on the price of CA Dacmagic in India?

A sound card, internal or external, has always been about output and input, that is A to D as well as D to A. If that is what you are likely to need, then the soundcard will fulfil the functions. A DAC, as its name states, is only about D to A, only about output.

My philosophy is not to pay for unwanted functions. When I bought my internal sound card, I wanted stereo analogue and digital input and output. I did not want five or seven channels, and I did not wand midi. I wanted to concentrate the spending on what I did want. I guess that the same philosophy could apply here: if you do not want input, if you do not want ADC, then why pay for it? Concentrate your spending on the DAC that you do want.
