Hi,
Trying to build my HT setup and looks like i started in the opposite direction!!! First bought the front speakers(LSi 9) then bought the Denon 3312 couple of days back. Now once i started connecting i realized that my TV is the old CRT one which has only RCA connections or composite Video. Although i am able to see the setup screen but i am not able to watch any movie via source( laptop or USB). I don't have a CDP ..now u realize that i started in the wrong direction:o. Below is the setup:
Laptop via HDMI--->AVR(HDMI port1)----->AVR(composite out)--->TV(via RCA). The RCA cable is by removing the tata sky STB and connecting to the AVR via the "Monitor out" for Video and L and R composite out ports.
The same happens once i connect the USB stick via the USB port in the hard drive. Infact i copied a WMV format video clip into the USB but the clip was not visible in the list of files while i was able to see the mp3 audio files.
Is there any way of using the existing TV and watch movies from USB/Laptop until i buy a new one with HDMI interface.
Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

Does ur Laptop has S-Video? If yes, you can connect Laptop to TV thru S-Video to composite Cable and Laptop to AVR thru HDMI simultaneously.

Or look at the Manual of Denon, If it supports downscaling, your AVR should be able to send from HDMI to Composit / Component.

wow you got the highest end AVR the denon 3312 and an OLD CRT TV....lol

dont wanna make fun but cant help pointing that its the worst possible combination and as far as I know denon does not downscale sources, so yeah do the s video way or buy a LED HD TV :)

Upgrade to a HD TV ASAP. For the time being, you can buy an entry level media player and use the composite or component video out to your TV and HDMI or optical/coaxial to AVR for audio.
