Picked up a Denon AVR 1713 last night from a local reseller.
The HDMI Video out never worked , tried everything but to no avail.

Then I noticed that the Serial numbers on the AVR and the Box are different.
As per Denon site they should be the same.

SR on Back panel of the AVR
2056610327

SR on Outer cardboard Box
2096620472

Can this happen ? Would appreciate a quick response as I am meeting the dealer later today.

The black image is from the AVR
White is on the box.

This should not be the case. The s/n should match. It means that the box was opened. Worst case you might have got a demo piece which was sold without even bothering if it works.

Meanwhile problem of HDMI could also be due to some connection issues. Can you mention the other components of your HT system and how you wired them together?

I dont think it is the connections.
First and foremost when you connect the HDMI out from the AVR to the TV,
Switch on TV > Set it to the right source, Switch on AVR. The AVR Onscreen menu should appear
This itself does not appear.

TV is a Samsung LCD
Verified all the ports / selected device on the AVR
Verified the HDMI cables, tried a different cable.
Verified Direct Laptop/Media player =HDMI> TV [ Everything works fine]
When routed through the AVR , No video out to the TV

Denon Products are imported in India by Kripa Electronics. Is there name mentioned on the carton box? Is there a mention of Profx dealer name? If not then you might have been received a grey market product. You can verify from the same before going to argue with the dealer with :: > Welcome to Kripa India <::

Back from the dealer.

He replaced the AVR with a new piece, this time the Serial numbers match.
Everything works fine on the new system.

The reseller claimed that this is the first time any such thing happened, he is not sure who switched the receiver.

Thanks everyone for responding to this thread. :D

Resurrecting my Original thread.
Please let me know if anyone else faced similar issues with a Denon 1713 AVR.

1. When I purchased the receiver it came defective (Jun 2013)
- HDMI video pass through failure
(Figured out the dealer switched the piece, got that sorted out and he replaced with a new piece + box , with serial numbers matching)

2. Six months later
- HDMI video pass through failure again
(Since it was under warranty dealer got it fixed under Denon warranty)
They said they changed the HDMI board, not sure what the issue was.

3. Now Jul 2014 same problem
- HDMI video pass through failure again
(This time out of warranty )

Rest of the functions work fine, I can hear the sound etc.. just no Video out.

Any pointers if I can get denon to fix it ?

I guess the reseller clearly tried to cheat you in the first instance by providing you with an used/ demo product or the pack was opened and he has packed the avr in another cardboard box of another avr. There is a very little chance of this happening at the factory. Moreover, the hdmi port was not working too.

Anyways, since you have noticed the issue (the mismatch serial no and fortunately the hdmi was not working) at the beginning and raised the dispute, the seller was smart enough to replace it.

Congrats on you new purchase and enjoy.

these things do happen these days and we should be more careful when buying things like these

always raise such issues and be very strict in dealing

some dealers try to push demo piece or bunk stuff

What kind of power protection you are using? HDMI boards are very sensitive to power fluctuation and tend to get damaged.

Since, it is out of warranty, unless there is no AMC, Denon will do it on cost basis only.
