Hi All,
My last weekend project
Posted a question earlier few days back on AVR selection and finally bought the Denon x3800h last Friday which has preouts for future external amps and i found it to be a solid sub with lot of features. I have heard Denon having issues earlier but I just took a chance considering the price performance of it.
Below is my setup and wanted if it needs any tweaks and need inputs from experts here.
Trying my best to get perfect sound in a kind of imperfect room.
Running 9.1 (surround back with single [mono] polk owm5[2-way, 3 driver] as I have space constraints and running out of speakers too ;-)
AVR: Denon x3800h
Front: B&W 602 S3
Center: Polk CS10
Surround (Side): Polk T15
Surround back: Polk OWM5 (Single mono mode, AVR supports it)
Front Heights: Polk OWM5s
Sub: Polk HTS-10
Steps:
1. Completed the Audyssey multieq xt32 calibration a few times in the night when there is no ambient noise and very quiet.
2. Calibration suggested front and center as full-range, but based on the speaker frequency response spec I set the crossover to 60Hz for the fronts (B&W) and 80Hz for the center (polk). Did not want to set fronts to full-range (large) and pass <= 80Hz to Sub in LFE+mains for 2 reasons: to protect the fronts and i found LFE+mains a bit boomy due to double-bass I like tight and less boomy bass.
3. Set rest of the speakers to 80Hz crossover.
4. Most of the wires are 16 gauge wires.
5. AVR Sub LFE crossover set to 120Hz
6. AVR Sub mode: LFE (LFE+main sounded the same as speakers are set to small or not full-range so left it at LFE)
7. Sub knob setting: (crossover to 120Hz and Gain knob set between 11 & 12'o clock, close to mid gain)
8. Sub Phase: 0 Vs 180 degress phase i felt there was very minor difference. Left it at 0 where it sounded better to me. Spent a lot of time here. Not sure if Audyssey takes care of this during calibration as i had left it on 0 deg.
Movie Mode parameter settings (Select 1, hold and press for few seconds):
1. Input eARC/HDMI audio from my Sony 65" TV
2. Sound mode: Dolby Atmos/Dsurr by default
3. Audyssey: Reference
4. Dynamic EQ: ON
5. Reference Level Offset: 0dB
6. Dynamic Volume: (light, off mode i found it too low)
7. Dialoque enhancer: low (did not find much difference between off and low)
8. Center Level: +1db above calibration for clarity
9. Sub trim: -4db as recommended by the calibration software
10. Cinema EQ: OFF (not sure if I need to make it ON)
Music Mode parameter settings (Select 2):
1. Input: Spotify (Heos mode)
2. Sound mode: Stereo Mode + Sub
3. Audyssey: Flat
4. Dynamic EQ: ON
5. Reference Level Offset: 5dB (not sure if I need to make it 10dB, I found 5dB or 10dB to be better than Zero offset)
6. Dynamic Volume: Off
7. Dialoque enhancer: Off
8. Center Level: NA
9. Sub trim: -3db (Added +1 db compared to movie/calibrated mode)
10. Cinema EQ: OFF (NA)
Please comment and hope this helps Denon users too. Open to suggestions if above settings need any tweaks for better sound.
Happy Diwali to all.
Cheers.
