@ grubyhalo
awesome thought for a thread! subscribed.

i've been an advertising professional for 22 years now, so design is very close to my heart. and, as can be seen by the amazing posts here, i'm glad to see i'm not alone!

the pix below are album covers by blue note records; one of my favourite jazz labels. the designer is reid miles; the photographer was usually francis wolff. together, they created a unique 'look' for the label. you could spot a blue note album a mile away.

THE UNDISPUTED FASTEST PASSENGER AIRCRAFT SINCE THE 70'S
Want speed this was it...

Oh yeah, the Concorde! It is a beauty!

One of the motives behind this thread was to find out fantastic designs that I was not aware of before. I hit pay-dirt with the Curta calculator. What an impressive piece of instrument and design! I read up on it's history and applications over the years and I am mighty impressed. Like all good things, this one seems to be going for a lot of moolah on eBay. Thanks for letting me discover the Curta, Quad!

if you haven't already, do check out moma. they have some amazing stuff that crops up from time to time.

here's a chess set i picked up a few years ago. the pieces are cut as per their line of movement. and their mass signifies their importance on the board. in addition, they all fit together like a jigsaw puzzle. a timeless design from the 60s.

A long long time ago during my childhood days, when we were returning from Delhi our train stopped at Itarsi junction where engines will be replaced. I asked my dad to take me close to the engine and we did. As we neared it I felt the whole ground around was shuddering in the presence of the monster. And just as we got closer it happened.... the engine driver pulled the whistle and blew my ears to kingdom:D . I literally jumped out of my bones. And I straight away ran to my moms lap:p
Sorry for going off topic. Just bought back fond memories.

Damn! That is nice! Maybe the whole thing should be wrapped in a checkered wrap for the board bit as a travel kit?

@ samuel
LOL! :)
you're not off topic, samuel. that's a great piece of classic design, too!

@ grubyhalo
hmmm, that's a pretty interesting idea! unfortunately, it didn't come with a board. and the pieces look small in the pic, but they're actually much bigger; definitely not a travel set.

These designs all have survived the test of time
