Hi,

I am planning to buy a Full HD media player.
Probably Xtreamer.
I have two questions..
1. I would plan to get it from US. Will they work fine in India.. May be my question is so stupid. I am a bit scared if some special unlocking is required.
2. I have a 5.1 speaker system of Altec Lansing (Currently I am using it with my desktop). Will I be able to connect it (My speakers do not have HDMI connectivity port) to the Xtreamer or any HD media player and enjoy the surround audio ?

Your suggestions and opinions are most welcome.

If your spk has digital(opt)in,you can connect them to get 5.1.
If your PC have dig in,you can input in PC to get ana 5.1out which spk can play.

AFAIK ,NO ALTEC Speakers have digital ( Optical or Co Axial ) inputs so it cannot be used.Still can we know exact model numbers plaese?

Also what price you are getting in US? If indian price difference is 1000 -2000 Rs ,better to buy from India,Also xtreamer.in and xtreamer on ebay have time to time promotions, please check that..

The model number is Altec Lansing VS3151R
I think it does not have digital audio in.
Will there be any adaptor that can be used to convert the digital audio out to the analog audio out or something else that my speakers can take in?

which pc you have

If you upgrade your pc you may not require xtreamer ,just add video card with hdmi and hdv supoort and a sound card with 7.1 HD audio support.there are pc experts who will help you

Standalone Decoders are preamps and are very expensive ,more expensive than many mass market HTIBs

Good idea. I will try to find the upgrade details. I bought my PC in 2006 with Pentium 4, 1.5 GB RAM.
Is it possible to upgrade just by adding the HDMI video card?
Can you suggest video card of which company is best in terems of video quality and DTS audio output..

Go for ATI RADEON series.

Dude...
I am surprised to see that the price of ATI Radeon HD 5870 in India is about 20K.

I thought upgrading my PC would be a cheaper option for me. But it looks like the situation is reversed.

Is it not a better idea to opt for the standalone digital media player like Xtreamer which would cost me about less than half the price of ATI Radeon HD 5870...?

Just wanted your comments....:o

Your MB may have AGB slot & you need that HDMI/DVI GC + onbrd SC can do the job.
8600 PCI-E is around Rs.1800 & it can be cheaper than getting media player.

What is '8600 PCI-E'...?
Is it the HD video card? or anything else.
Below are my motherboard specs.

Memory Bus Properties:
Bus Type DDR SDRAM
Bus Width 64-bit
Real Clock 167 MHz (DDR)
Effective Clock 334 MHz
Bandwidth 2676 MB/s

Chipset Bus Properties:
Bus Type Intel Direct Media Interface

Motherboard Physical Info:
CPU Sockets/Slots 1 Socket 775
Expansion Slots 3 PCI, 1 PCI-E x16
RAM Slots 4 DDR DIMM

As I checked the system requirements of latest ATI HD video card - My system would support it.

But the only worry is that this ATI HD video card is too costly ~$300 (around Rs 20000/-)

So I am confused how it could be cheaper than the standalone digital media player...?

8600 is nvidia basic videocard with DVI out which can be used as HDMI for LCD(I did that).
new ATI HDcards starts from 3.5k(3series) 4series abt 5k & higher sries are costly as you said. You can go with basic card which can work well with LCD.

I found your MB has PCI-E 1X slot(Blue one)where you can install GC.
