Since I started my audio journey way back in 1988 and made a shift from midfi to hifi sometime in 2009 after joining HFV, I've realised how profound the effect of room has on the final sound.

In my experience, the intensity of problems associated with room are inversely proportional to quantum of furnishing. Of course, I'm not talking about subwoofers here. The speakers I owned last were Cadence Aristas that go down to 32 Hz and I was able to mitigate the boominess and room reflections just by getting the placement of speakers right.

To be continued...

That's helluva teaser!!!! Sound treatment seems to be the season's flavour. Looking forward to the full post...

There are two issues that need to be addressed:-

1. Early reflections: This affects mid and higher frequencies of the music predominantly. They consist of musical sound waves that are reflected off the walls, ceiling and floor. Hence they reach the ears later than the sound coming directly from the speakers. They are heard within 20 odd milliseconds later than the direct sound and hence perceived as part of the music. This phenomenon typically alters the tonal balance and smears the music either emphasising or attenuating particular frequencies. This phenomenon is called 'comb filtering'. Since this happens across wide band of frequencies which bounce off multiple planes and surfaces of different materials and reach the ears at different intervals with differing intensities, the accuracy of music gets affected significantly.

2. Room modes: This only affects low frequency content of the music. They consist of standing sound waves reinforced by the boundary walls of the listening room and result in uncontrolled and uneven bass response. This phenomenon results in boominess, uneven bass response, obscuring of midrange etc. Even this happens across wide band of frequencies getting reinforced/ cancelled off multiple planes before reaching the ears affecting the accuracy of music significantly.

It should not be. It should be the first thing that has to be considered even before equipment selection.
Cheers,
Sid

Well that's when people are tutored; folks like me take the plunge first and then realize that oxygen mask is needed!!! So, I am back on the shore; looking to learn about living room acoustic remedies.

nice share. In addition of sharing external links, few pointers here in bulletin points shall be of great help.
